Good walking shoes?

  • Hi all! I have been walking more recently and I notice that my shoes don't give me as much support for as long as before. I noticed this time I bought New Balance (actually men's since they were wider) but my feet were hurting after only 2 months. How often do you have to replace tennis shoes? When do you know to replace them? What are the best for overweight people (I weigh 340 now)? Thanks for your help!
  • I saw an ad for Ryka shoes and most Lady Foot Locker stores carry them. I'm going to try to get to the store this week and try them. I have nerve pain in my toes, and haven't found a pair of shoes I can keep on my feet for more than 2 hours max.

So I've learned to put my shoes on just before I exercise and take them off immediately and wear my sandals. Hope that helps.
  • Thanks for the idea. I've heard the Ryka's are a little narrower than some shoes, but they are specifically designed for women's feet. Good luck!
  • Walking Shoes
I'm part of a Walking group - actually it's a Marathon training group and we have a Walker's division. There are a lot of newbies that join every year and we have running shoe specialists who come and advise us on what to get.

Asics - is a great brand I particularly like the Kayano, .

Saucony - is also teriffic but I have a narrow foot and heal and I kept sliding so it didn't work for me.

Adidas - actually has a brand with great support for Walkers I wish I could remember what it's called but ask for the new one for Walkers.

And some of the Walkers like the Brooks brand, I can't remember specifically which one.

Also, remember your foot needs support for all that ankle action and pushing off. They should also be asking you to show them which way your foot leans. Mine lean in and that's called pronating.

    Hope that helps.
  • Shoes
I do a little walking, jogging and use cardio machines but I still have a hard time finding shoes myself..I have tried so many types!

I choose Adidas for my feet. Nikes seem to be long and narrow...my feet are size 8.5 and wide. Mine are called Osweego and I don't know if they make them any more but I've had mine for two years (it's time for new ones!) but I can't find any more! I had Ozweegos before this too, and they are great as far as cusioning and for my wide feet. Look inside the shoes at the heel part...it will say something that the shoe is meant for, like "cushion" or "support cushion".

As I said Nike seems narrow, New Balance has weird contours for me, I do have a pair of Asics but they seem to be too narrow too, and that's really all I've tried. Oh, Asics has this new shoe that comes in sizes XS-XXL that is supposed to mold to your feet (both men and womem)..I thought about checking them out but they were butt ugly!

I personally don't recommend wearing men's shoes because I find they are just "different". I've tried them but something is always off because men's feet are different than mine.

    Hope that helps.
  • Thanks so much to all of you! I think my WIDE feet are going to be much happier! Thanks!
