Camping and the Beach

  • So, this weekend HB and I go camping (and I propose!!!)

But, I'm here to talk about food. We went food shopping last night and here's what I bought:

    FF hot dogs
Vegetarian Beans (for her, not me)
    Far East Couscous
    Far East Brown Rice
    lettuce blend
    Salmon
    93% lean ground beef
    eggs
    turkey bacon
Trail Mix (was going to make my own but the one I found seemed SB friendly, can use as a treat)
    Jerky (for her)
    Blueberries
    Peppers
    Strawberries
    Crystal Light
    Water

How does that look? Any other suggestions? We are going hiking and I am going to need some salt I think...

Oh, we also bought marshmellows. That will be my treat as well. I could only ever eat one or two anyway...I can't go camping without burning a 'mellow or two!

I also bought Shredded Wheat and Bran as well as 100% Whole Wheat bagels and lite cream cheese to add to my breakfasts.

Between the berries and the above, I am one happy camper. Quite literally.
  • hahahah! that sounds like a great list! and you gave me ideas for what i should bring when I go camping!
  • That sounds pretty good. I also usually take SF WW hot dog buns. I do gain after eating hot dogs though (probably all the sodium) so just be prepared. You have many of the things I bring. I also bring WW Tortillas and make quesadillas with RF cheese. Or put ham and cheese in the tortillas. But them I'm also looking for food that a 7 year old will eat.
  • Good Idea Barb. We did get WW buns too -- HB wasn't thrilled but she sucked it up for me

Plus, I figure the sodium in the dogs will keep me hydrated while I hike...
  • Hi Jenne, soooo excited 4 u this week ! If you are doing alot of Hiking - gatorade or pedalyte... They sell tabs for electrolyte replacement at REM,or other type of hiking/outdoor stores..
If you like tomato juice, that will give you a good kick up in Sodium too..!
  • Gee! Can I come with you, Jenn!?
That sounds great! And I'm sure you'll find some way to work off some calories.
  • Gatoage is chock full of sugar though, no?

Bringing V-8 and HB bought herself tomato juice. Maybe a piece or two of her jerky will work.

Ellis - come on down!!! The Shenandoah Valley is apparently beautiful !!
  • Hi Jenne... no not really full of sugar... has some, since your muscles do need the carb replacement.. about 6% of it is carb based.. but more importantly it contains the electrocyte, Potassium and Sodium you need. To me it is worth to take that sugar hit.
Just that most folks think you need "Sodium" replacement,,ie Salt tabs...You'll need to be just as concerned with electrocyte replacement.. Sodium only does a partial job at that. And while you are hiking you may experience FAT sausage fingers, and ankles with the sodium uptake.
.I learned a valuable lesson in sodium intake versus using pedalyte/gatorade. I hiked 10 miles down the Grand Canyons Bright Angel trail, in 110 degrees with 10 pounds on my back ...I made sure I had good source of sodium, lots of water... the last mile, I was in very bad shape, till this guy gave me his pedalyte and a "tongue lashing" about being more knowledgeable about what your body needs... I was better within a few minutes. Now when I take on more strenous hikes, like the Appalachian trail, I pack pedalyte....just food for thought.....
  • Good advice!!!! Thanks Schatzi
  • Jenn hope you have a great weekend!!!!
