Maintainers Weekly Chat: April 3 - April 9

  • Indeed the trimming of the American Elm next door drew the neighborhood kids and I to watch with wonder. They used two large pieces of equipment: the bucket crane and the taller lifting crane. The guy in the bucket crane cut small branches and dropped them onto the street. Another guy, at the same time, secured himself to a major branch, then secured the canvas loops from the taller crane to a much larger sized branch; cut the branch; and the taller crane lifted it over the roofs of the adjacent houses before lowering it to the street.

When the neighbor had to get the kids to quit to go to school, the policeman on duty stopped the work and escorted the kids past the cranes. Some kids arrive at school with the best tales to tell.

My walking has improved since my whining about the weather last week. I found two opportunities to get out instead of using cold and snow as an excuse to drive. We were reminded by the Boston Globe that we had a major snow storm on April 1st twenty years ago, 1997 April Fool's Day blizzard. Snow can arrive late in the season.
  • Tree surgery always looks so impressive!

Another glorious day here. Sun out, bulbs out, gusty wind coming up from the south.

I took photos when tree guys took down the tulip tree next door. No cranes, just a guy with a chainsaw and a group of guys on the ground. Amazing!

We are starting with our April showers - forecast for most of the week. I hate working in the wet but console myself with it being rain, rather than snow.

  • March roared out like a lion with tremendous winds that knocked down trees and diverted flights but left us with slightly cooler temperatures which are going up this week. We have a golf tournament Friday and it's supposed to be in the low 90's. Hot.
  • One of my friends is on the HOA for her condo complex and they had 12 trees removed from behind the condos a few months ago. They used that same equipment where it lifted them over the houses and dropped them into a chipper in the front parking area. SO COOL. She recorded it all and put it on FB.
  • A day without rain and relatively warm - I'll take it!

  • Today and tomorrow will be the tough days this week. Very high winds today and a lot of rain. Then snow tomorrow. SIGH. I was hoping that was done for this season. There buds and shoots in my backyard - it's spring Mother Nature!

Trixie goes in for her dental stuff tomorrow. I'm hoping the 2 teeth which might have to be extracted prove to be OK. It's about a $1000 difference in an already high price and DH is going to be without a job and any kind of income in just over 2 weeks. More debt is not what we need.

But the teeth have to be addressed. Trix could develop an infection which could lead to all sorts of problems, so I'm being proactive rather than reactive.

  • Oh, Dagmar, your weather! Fingers crossed for Trixie. We all agree here about how important teeth are! (My dental implant work last year worked out OK.)

No implants for Trixie though. I wonder if they have them for dogs? They sure have everything else.
