  • I was on IP in 2010 and lost about 50 pounds. I did not phase out properly and had several attacks with pancreatitis over the course of the next year and subsequently had to have my gallbladder removed. It was never really proven that the diet was the culprit, but all signs pointed that way.
Five years later, I found a local Chiropractor that sells the IP program. I've met with her several times and I think I want to try the program again. Her practice is much more professional than the last one I used and she seems adamant that I phase out properly this time.
I would really like to know if any of you are on this program with no gallbladder. If so, has it posed any particular problems for you?
  • I have not had a gallbladder since I was 28. I am 54. I have had ZERO issues on IP.
  • Thanks. So glad to hear that. I am scheduled to restart this Monday.

Doxi - hi! Do you mind me asking what it was about IP that made your doctors think it was the program that caused the issues? I ask because prior to starting IP, I was having serious gallbladder issues / attacks and have had 0 problems over the last 6 months. It's another reason I'm scared about phasing off...
  • Beth... Gallbladder issues can be triggered by fatty foids (and spicy foods). Since IP is a low fat plan, it makes sense that you would not have attacks. Of course you can continue to eat low fat in maintenance though not usually as low as phase 1. And truth be told, if you had issues before, you probably will again. Having your gallbladder out is not really much of an issue and is BY FAR better than the pain of an attack!
  • Thanks Laurie I've been for ultrasounds, dye tests, etc...I was hoping IP might "reset" the issue. Guess we'll see. Still curious what about the IP plan(being low fat, low calorie low carb) led to Doxi's doctors thinking IP was the cause...
  • BETH

Rapid weight loss can cause gallbadder issues. But, so can obesity.
  • I have no gallbladder and have had no issues on IP. I tend to have issues digesting raw veggies so I make sure the majority is cooked. I have also learned that the enzymes are very helpful.
  • I am not on IP but put my gallbladder under a lot of stress (fortunately did not have to have it removed) with my weightloss which was dramatic. Unfortunately the culprit is a low fat diet because your gallbladder is not flushing bile out and stones can more easily form. If IP is low fat, then it would be conducive to gallbladder problems, especially in women who are more prone, and perhaps most noticeable when you eat a high fat meal again.

But once a gallbladder has been removed a low fat diet is considered the best course of action to ease digestion. So you should be good to go.
  • Don't have a technical answer, but apparently eating extremely low-fat over four months and then going right back in to eating high fat with no transition was too much for my system. It is very possible that I was prone to gallstones and pancreatitis and not transitioning properly caused my system to go wacky.
  • Thanks Tracy and Ian - a little nervous about whats going to happen and makes phasing off properly even more critical...
  • My gallbladder was removed 10 years ago (no stones, just a lot of "sludge"). I've been doing alternative IP for 6 weeks, and haven't had a bit of trouble.
  • F@ck. Just as I wrote this I got my annual medical check up. My BP and cholesterol are tip top (I used to be on meds for those) but my white blood cell count is low and my liver function results are bad. So I have to have a sonogram to check...my gallbladder. Sh!t. If it's not one thing, it's another.

    Argh.
  • Just my two cents worth here, but I recently asked my coach about the importance of the 2 tsp of olive (or the likes of) oil. Sometimes, I forget- her response was that it's important for your gallbladder and kidneys to decrease the likely hood of stones and other issues. I did not ask any further questions.
  • I was on IP last year and lost a lot "for Me". I started having pains within about two months. I just had a CT and Ultra sound last week and yesterday at the doctor was told I have gallstones and am waiting for a approval to have my gallbladder removed. I don't know if it would have happened anyway but I never had a problem before. I believe that it was from losing weight so fast. I'm back at it though.
