Coconut oil

  • I have heard many great things about coconut oil and wanted your advice as well. Anyone take it daily to help with weight loss or other issues?

I've never seen anything about it promoting weight loss. I do know a lot of people use it in "oil pulling," which is supposed to be beneficial in many ways.
  • I cook with it. I use it instead of vegetable oils (I don't use those anymore). I wouldn't say it promotes weight loss as it's as calorie dense as any other oil.
  • Here's a recent thread:

  • Use to use it with my coffee but the texture put me off. Now i just use it for cooking my protein in the frying pan and then drizzling it over my lettuce. slurps.
  • Lots of low carb, high fat diets promote coconut oil since it's high in fat and can be substitute for oil or butter or whatever. When I first went on my low-low carb diet, I bought it (at Costco, 2 HUGE jars) and loved the smell of it. I cooked eggs with it once and I was fine, but days later the smell of warm, frying coconut oil makes me want to puke so I no longer use it. I think I'll use the rest for my hair. :P
  • ha ha yes. It ruins my food too. I just love olive oil and i use butter too. I also use sesame oil and i know for cooking i should use some other oil like peanut but since my overall oil intake is low I can't see the problem with a bit of cooked olive oil and butter.

Eat whatever tastes the best. If you aren't overeating, you have nothing to worry about.
  • I use a lot of coconut oil. I make a body scrub from raw sugar and coconut oil, I use it plain for cleaning my face and as an all-over moisturizer. The best thing has been for my hair though. About once a every week or two I slather on the coconut oil and wrap my hair in a towel and leave it on overnight, then wash it out in the morning. It makes my hair very soft and shiny.
  • I have 1 tsp a day. I love the taste and find that it satisfies my sweet tooth so I don't crave sweets. When I'm in maintenance mode, I roast butternut squash cubes in it, with garlic powder & cayenne pepper. Yum!
