Sleep disturbances

  • Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone knows about sleep disturbances, particularly periodic limb movement disorder, similar to restless leg syndrome. I recently had a sleep study and even though I only made it through 90 minutes of the study, they suspect I may have that issue. This doesn't surprise me because I've always been a restless sleeper. My doctor thinks that the kicking and thrashing of my legs causes me to be very tired during the day, which explains why I'm always so tired. I'm going to meet with my sleep medicine doctor this week, I'm eager to hear what she has to say.

    All advice welcomed, thanks!
  • My husband has RL and takes klonopin at night to sleep. That is the extent of my insight. Will you see a dr for followup to the sleep study?
  • Thanks Shannon, I see the sleep medicine doctor tomorrow. Not to be personal but does the Klonopin help?

    Take care,

    Amy

My doctor gave me klonopin long ago after a very scary airplane ride (so I could get back on the plane and go home!). Thankfully I can fly now without it but when I did take it I felt like nothing could bother me. Just relaxed all over and in floaty land (I had a very low dose)
  • Thank you for the replies! I rescheduled my sleep medicine doc visit to tomorrow. We'll see how it goes. I think that Parkinson meds are used for this.

    Take care!

  • Amy, as best I can tell it just knocks him out. He could sleep through a tornado.
  • Shannon,

I met with the sleep specialist last week and she doesn't think that it's restless leg, which is frustrating because something is off, I'm exhausted a lot of the time. I'm not going back to her, she was digging at my other health issues to try and find an answer, I don't agree with that.

    Good night. Take care.

  • Interesting. I have noticed that since I have started exercising more (and a lot), I do get more limb movements in my sleep. Probably not as serious as you describe but definitely enough to wake me sometimes. The boxing is the worst. I'll throw a left jab in my sleep sometimes!
  • Ian,

Thank you for replying. Hmmm, a jab in your sleep, that must tire you out. See, that's my thing, I'm tired a lot during the day, I thought it was from all my kicking while I sleep. I'm going to get another opinion, I'll see. I'm also getting some blood tests.

    Thanks!

    Take care.
  • I had that tired thing and the restless leg thing. It turned out to be related to my PCOS/IR (diet choices leading to too many carb exhaustion) and then hormone cycles (the restless leg/joint pain thing before my period.)

Just throwing it out there in case it helps you as you seek a dx.

    A.
  • Interesting, thank you for pointing that out. I notice you are hypothyroid, so am I.

    I appreciate your help...
