Do fluctuations get you down?

  • I'm trying to be realistic... There was a time when if my weight fluctuated even .2 gained I would throw a fit and starve myself for the rest of the day. THIS time I am trying to be more healthy and realistic and enjoy my journey, not dread it.

Unfortunately, the scale fluctuations still drive me crazy. Even though I know it's not fat gain I still get disappointed and feel like I'll never reach my goal with those damn fluctuations!

Do you get upset when you see any sort of gain? If so or if not, how do you cope with it and try to keep realistic expectations of yourself?
  • Yep. Absolutely. Yes SIReee.

I track my daily weigh-ins and keep a weekly average (the average weight for the previous 7 days). I plot them both using Excel--in spite of all the daily ups and downs, you can really see the progress in the weekly average curves.
  • I try to pay close attention to other types of indications that I'm losing weight, like how my pants feel, how much energy I have, how much farther I was able to walk in a fast pace today, how many hours of sleep I got last night etc. If the scale is making you crazy then put it away for a few days/weeks, as long as you can stand it and try measuring the other things which are more important than a stupid number on a stupid box on the stupid floor.
  • Yes! Even a small gain is disappointing. But I don't change my plan I just ride it out.
  • I"d be lying if i said it made me feel good when the scale goes up but i know enough to know its insignificant. I keep doing what i'm doing for the most part. AT most i might tweak my diet a bit.

Maybe you are not confident enough about the diet approach you've taken. I see your calories are low now. It is more effective in the medium-long term not to lose the weight too fast at this stage.

I think you'd' accept the frustrations because they are part of the process of weightloss even when you are doing it right and even when you are losing.

Practice letting it go. Or weigh yourself less often.

Or maybe it would help you to plot it on a graph or in a list at least so you could the general direction you are going in.

Of course its important to stick to your eating plan if you believe its correct

  • I have such a bad relationship with the scale that I've abandoned daily weigh-ins. Now I weigh myself about every 2 weeks. That way I see loss and don't get obsessed. When I weighed daily I was driving myself crazy with the ups and downs of it. It's liberating to weigh less often.
  • I definitely get upset, I think most of us do. We work hard to lose weight and when the scale doesn't show it, how could a person not get upset. Very angry at times.
  • Yes. I just keep going. It is so tough at lower weights to consistently lose.
  • Yes, that's why I try not to check myself daily. Fluctuations do happen and it's silly to get bugged by them. I either not weight myself in daily or convince myself that it means nothing before I jump on the scale.
  • I do get upset. It's frustrating everytime, but at least now I know that it is a necessary stage in the journey, so I deal with it.
    It's all part of it.
  • Even knowing that fluctuations are perfectly natural, it's still disappointing to see a fluctuation in the "wrong" direction. I got better at dealing with it over time, and I've had *lots* of time to practice, but I'm still not completely free from the disappointment. I'm post-menopausal now so my fluctuations are a lot less severe, but they are still present.

That said, I still like to weigh every day and when the scale does fluctuate, it tends to resolve within a few days.
  • I dont get too upset with a small gain every few weeks because I know that is how I loose. I have a large loss every 4 -6 weeks folowed by gains and losses less than 1 lb for the next few weeks. What upsets me is when I fight the same 3 lbs for 6 weeks! I have recently had large losses (2 - 3 lbs) only to have large gains the following weeks! grrr. It's either my cheating or the dreaded platue!
  • Fluctuating up for one or two days doesn't bother me, but I start to get irritated if I go up for more than three days in a row. For the most part, though, I don't mind. I keep a graph showing both my daily weights and my 7-day average, which really helps to smooth out the fluctuations and give me a realistic look at how I'm actually progressing.
  • Oh, yes. I'm frustrated with the scale this morning...that's why I'm here on the board right now! I just need to read about others hanging in there to give myself some reinforcement. And, with a little thought, I just realized that it's probably ovulation that's causing the little blip. I feel much better, now. Keep on keeping on! That's all we can do
