  • Quote: No little kids at home.
We go out to avoid the whole situation.
Schools are infiltrated with the stuff, however -- on a DAILY basis. Halloween just makes it worse.

For many years, Nov 1 was a personal day for me...children over-sugared are NOT fun

OH Goodness ! I didn't know you are a/were a teacher Mrs. Lisa!
there is a special place in heaven for teachers!
  • We live in the country, so the few nearby children we deliver their treats to them. works out great this year.
  • I live in a rural area, so we have the celebration on Main Street. The kids only trick or treat there, so everyone donates candy to the hardware store whose owners dole it out to all the houses on Main St. It's a fun night and I don't have to have the candy in the house.

The school district I work for had a "cupcake controversy" a couple of years ago. Now there are strict rules as to what food can and cannot be served at student events. We're trying to set a healthy example for the kids.

On the other hand, there really is no empirical evidence that sugar causes hyperactivity. The Yale Scientific Web site says, "Through various experiments over the years, scientists have discovered that no substantial evidence exists to support the claim that sugar causes hyperactivity." Read it yourself at http://www.yalescientific.org/2010/0...hildren-hyper/. Parenting.com also has an article about this (don't have the URL.)
  • Quote: We end up with two giant bowls of candy to hand out. My DH has a hard time keeping his mitts off of it, but I am fortunate that candy was never one of my weaknesses. If it was a big bowl of mashed potatoes and gravy I might have a problem. ha ha.

I think it may be a good idea to fore-go the candy this year for my DH's sake.
This is me too. I actually have to buy candy on Oct. 31 so that dh will not eat it all. As for me, I can't wait to get it out of my house and don't really miss it.

I'm more worried about thanksgiving - turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy. All my weaknesses!

Hyperactivity isn't really my issue with candy at school - it's more about using candy as an incentive - food rewards are all kinds of messed up IMO, BUT I was fat as a child. So I tend to be very sensitive to avoiding food/reward emotional ties when it comes to my kids.

Cupcakes are occasional (at least in a school with our classroom sizes, 10 kids or less) My issue with (homebaked) cupcakes in the classroom is different. - basically, I don't know where they came from. I have no idea on their sanitary practices and I am just uncomfortable with it.
  • There is plenty of evidence that candy increases blood sugar and then causes the "crash". Anyone who has eaten too much sweets knows how horrible they feel. I don't think I ever said candy was a cause of "hyperactivity".

Anyone who has real 1:1 with kids knows sugar makes them cranky...meltdown cranky ....and hard to deal with. That is evidence of crashing! How many of us adults have ever gotten a headache from chocolate?

I feel cranky now when I don't get my veggies or enough of my romaine!
  • Quote: Ok...I recognize...it's good/easier NOT to have little kids at home for this night...makes handling Halloween candy easier:

We have theater tickets for a Broadway show on Halloween... So I'll be buying candy treats for my next door neighbors to hand out with theirs... and delivering it as soon as I buy it.

We will have a nice IP compliant dinner at a seafood restaurant close to the theater...

And then it will be past the little neighborhood goblin's bedtimes when we return home.

What ideas does anyone else have for handling the "Hallowed Evening of Chocolate" this year???
65x65 - what Broadway Show are you going to see? I recently saw Kinky Boots (off broadway) and it was so much fun! I love theater and seeing a show is one of the most spectacular and magical treats around. Good for you for indulging in non-food ways

    Quote: haha.. thanks!

here is the poison bowl in all its glory:

Floridasunshine - I need that bowl of Poison! Where did you find it? LOVE IT!
  • I'm glad this chat has started. I love candy! Every year I delay buying it until the last minute but then I eat it the night of and then proceed to eat my kids treats for the next week.
This year will be different. I have lost 14 lbs after 2weeks on IP but more importantly don't crave sugar and I don't want to start. I think I will walk with the kids and then throw most of it away at the end of the night!
  • Bumping this for now!
Stay strong all...You are better than a Reeses cup! MUCH better!!!
  • I don't have anyone that comes to my house because we live on a quiet street. The smart kids go right to the apartments! If i was giving out candy i'd do the same thing I do when i have company - buy something i don't like. I recently bought raisinettes and plain mms for a party because they don't tempt me. Today i have to make a cake for a friend's birthday. It goes against everything in my inner pastry chef but I'm using boxed cake mix because i think its too much of a disappointment to cheat with. Not to mention full of artificial crap ingredients!
  • Ever since i posted my last comment about making a boxed cake mix for a birthday the ad at the top of the 3FC page is for betty crocker birthdays! LOL!

    We are going to see
"The Adams Family" at the DuPont Theater

It should be a fun evening...(and an appropriate Halloween treat!) We'll go to a seafood restaurant right across the street for an IP compliant dinner first...!

I did not realize you were a teacher, either. What level? I teach middle school- math, LA, and science. We have a "dance" for Halloween, and there will be snacks, but they'll be easy for me to avoid. However, I always have a bar or other packet on hand just in case!

Quote: This thread is reminding me of a funny story (and making me giggle). When I was in Graduate School, I lived in an apartment building and wasn't expecting Trick or Treaters. So I was shocked when my doorbell rang at 7:30 pm Halloween night with a little dressed up goblin. Distressed and looking frantically around my efficiency apartment for SOMETHING -- all I could find was a half a pint of rum!! Suddenly a light-bulb went off in my head and I grabbed my purse and gave the little tyke a dollar bill. Well wouldn't you know it, he proceeded to tell all the other trick or treaters in the building that the girl in 313-C was giving out dollar bills!! Five minutes later I must have had 30 kids ringing my doorbell and banging on my door wanting their dollar bill "treats" ... meanwhile I proceeded to crawl (very quietly) under my bed.
What a great story! Thanks for sharing.

Quote: i've had a huge bowl of chocolate candy (it's a black bowl with a skull and the word "poison" on it.. haha) on my desk for the last week or so for halloween, and it hasn't bothered me at all. i just see them as little fat bombs. little nuggets of cellulite and puffy cheeks and tummy rolls. it's all a mental game. win it.
Such a strong attitude! Thanks for sharing! I have avoided the bowl of candy placed on the teachers' lunch table, and I feel such a little success every time I walk by!

Quote: We are in a new house so no idea how many kids we will have. But, my solution is to buy candy that I don't like. NO temptation that way.
This is exactly what I did. Chocolate would be too tempting, so I bought the sugary stuff-Jolly Ranchers, Skittles, etc. These things don't tempt me at all. I have also hidden in from hubby. If there are leftovers, I will store them for my daughter or take them to the teachers at school.

Thanks! I always wonder about your work at the casino. I am looking to take courses and move toward that career path. We have a number of casinos recently opened or in the planning stages around here.

We are working toward these rules and whatever we can in order to make our school healthier. A number of parents are bucking against the new policy; I just don't get it. Having a cake for your kid at home on their birthday is one thing; having cupakes or other treats multiple times a month is another. Oh, well. We will work slowly towards better health for the kids.
  • I made dh buy candy I don't like and NOOOO chocolate allowed!
