My trainer told me not to record my...

  • weight but to record my measurements. Like my waist size of my leg arms etc etc.. Because the weight could be going up due to muscle or water weight?....How true is that.. I know i should believe my trainer but he spent more time on his phone than actually training...
  • Someone like JohnP hopefully will come along and let us know if the measurements are enough to track with. He's good with this stuff.

But....for the phone part???? I'd never ever go back. I hate flipping cell phones when I should have someone's full attention, esp. someone being PAID by me for their attention, thank you very much.
  • I think you should be recording both. Your weight can fluctuate of course with weight training. But you should still be able to see a pattern of weight loss over time. Recording your measurements will help keep you motivated though for the weeks when the scale doesn't move as much as you'd like.

Also, not cool for you trainer to be on the phone. I'd say something or get a new one. You are paying (i'm assuming) for their time and expertise, they should be 100% focused on you.

    Good luck!
  • I agree with the above. I record both my weight and my measurements. I even set an "inch loss" goal. I weigh myself daily (not recommending that...it just works for me), but only track my measurements once a week. Sometimes I will lose inches but not lose weight. So, tracking both helps to keep me motivated.

And, yep, either tell your PT to get off the phone or find a new one who's more interested!
  • Yup, you should be recording both weight and measurements.

Maybe your trainer doesn't want you to get discouraged if you don't see an immediate drop in weight? As long as you're aware that there will be fluctuations and aren't worried about seeing it vary from day to day I think you should keep track of your weight. It can help you to get to know your body better and keep yourself accountable.
  • Ya, maybe he doesn't want you to weigh everyday and get obsessive over dropping weight everyday. I'd weigh once a week or at least once a month.
  • For myself I'm doing both, weighing once a week and measurements once a month. That way if I'm not seeing progress with one I should see progress with the other, that's my hope anyway!
  • It also depends on your goals - what do you want to look like?

Take an example of someone famous that you really admire and/or think looks hot. I'll use Sofia Vergara as an example. If you looked just like her, do you care whether the scale says 130 or 170?

    Great advice Jen!
  • Thanks Guys for your responses. I think Im going to take the advice and record both. As for trainer yes I left him. Decided to save the money and just do what he was making me do and other stuff thanks!
