A few of my facebook friends have posted this as well...I think it's such a great video for women to watch. Kudos to Dove for doing things like this.

Meh, haters gonna hate. Is the ad perfect? No. Is it positive? Yes.

I didn't take the blog post to mean that women should loathe themselves. What stood out to me, and something I agreed with, was the list of things that were considered 'negative' things in the video. Freckles, a big forehead, scars, a round face.

There was a post a couple of months ago with a link to a gallery of pictures of women, nude. And I remember someone commenting (in a positive way) about one of the women who had obviously lost a lot of weight. She was proudly showing off her stretch marks and loose skin -- almost like battle scars.

I understand the positive message they meant to send in the Dove video. At the same time, I agree with a lot of what the blogger wrote. So I thought I'd share her critique of the Dove ad.

Isn't it crazy how we fixate on the things we don't like about ourselves & miss what is beautiful?

My second attempt...

In my earlier post ( that was swallowed) I said that fixate on the fact that I have a huge belly but don't pay any attention to my sculpted and toned legs. Secondly; I have amazing emerald green eyes, my son has blue/green sapphire eyes and my daughter has violet eyes....when we are together people take a step back and go ...wow...you three look freaky/amazing.

Quiet Ballerina - I read the post...and while I think the overall Dove ad was really pretty positive - I get what she's saying. Especially in the last paragraph when it comes to the friends we choose....which could also be extended to the professional world and the choices we make there.

However, I don't think we can get away from the fact that women especially, but also men are judged on physical attractiveness. Physical attractiveness is a sign of health and reproductive fitness...we're wired to find attractive...well, attractive.

I see WAAAAY to many women on this forum alone saying "I don't go the gym/ run/ etc. etc. because I hate the way I look." If anything can help people realise they judge themselves worse than others do.

Yes SUM38 - I think we do focus too much on the negative. I've been guilty of hiding my light under a bushel because I was trying to cover flaws. I now try to dress to accentuate the positive and as long as what I'm wearing doesn't draw attention to the negative - I get compliments.

Love it, I love Dove! Our own perception is always skewed isn't it? Men don't do this to themselves, they can be hairy like bears with a beer gut and look in the mirror and think they look good. But we could be a size 2 and think we're fat. I know I don't perceive myself correctly. When someone tells me I'm beautiful I think they're lying flat out. Also, when I look at pictures of myself from previous years I think "wow I used to look so good!" when in fact at the time I thought I looked worse than ever!

Boooo! I'm so sick of the whole racism thing. People are people are people are people. Why does each and every commercial have to be diverse down to a percentage? It's just not about that.
