When I was doing the rope pull-down thing today, and the rower, and pretty much anything that required my arms, it felt like my ribs were either stabbing me or positioning out of place. What is this sensation? It was not pleasant!

Maybe you're not using good form? Get a personal trainer to check your form...
Yeah, I agree with Irene. It sounds like you're tweaking your back muscles.
