My first race this weekend!

  • So this weekend Saturday I'll be running my very first 5K run, called the Cape Town Marathon Fun Run.

I was supposed to do my first one over a month ago but it got cancelled due to bad weather.

I'm not quite where I want to be with regard to fitness level, but about two months ago I suffered a knee injury which put me out for 2 weeks (and I had only been running for about three weeks - so that definitely didn't help!), and then just as I started running again, I got extremely sick with a kidney infection, which put me out for another three weeks. I thus only started running properly again a week ago (yet I managed to keep up with where I left off before getting sick with the kidney infection), and I've been doing juuust under 4km in 31 min 30 seconds.

For the 5K, my goal is 41min 30 seconds. I'm hoping I make this goal!

Anywaaay, any advice for a first time 5K runner?
  • Take it all in and just enjoy the experience!

5ks are a lot of fun. You'll probably go faster than you anticipate because of the "race mentality."

I tend to find a person that seems to be going the pace I want/comfortable with and stay with them.
