Kale Chips Question

  • So DH is wanting "chips" and wants me to bake cucumbers, but I think those have too much water and won't turn out right. I told him about kale chips and he is semi interested. He wants to know (I guess I do too) can you use cinnamon and splenda to season them instead of salt and have them as sweet snacks or would they turn out yucky??

    Thanks
  • I don't think they would be very good with cinnamon and splenda. But maybe I just can't really imagine it tasting good because I don't particularly like kale (it has a strong cabbage taste).

I make crispy spinach the same way I made kale chips, and I sprinkle the spinach with salt and splenda. I think spinach would be equally good with cinnamon and the flavours would compliment each other better than the kale-sweet combo.
  • i heard on here there is a recipe for zuchinni chips...which would work bettter than cucumber.
  • zuchinni would be my vote, and you can probably flavor it a million ways.
  • Here is a recipe I found on the forums. I haven't tried them yet but they should turn out well. I made the "baked apples" using zucchini by cooking them with lemon juice, apple pie spice, and splenda till they were soft and syrupy and they came out very good.

I used my mandoline to slice up a zucchini into 'chips', spread them on an aluminum lined cookie sheet, lightly sprayed with some evoo, sprinkled with apple pie spice & 1 splenda packet. Baked at 350 for 20 minutes. Sweet tooth = Satisfied. Gotta find new ways to kick these hungries to the curb!
  • I've only made kale chips savory (though I prefer savory flavors - even my "sweet" favorites are usually salty/sweet/spicy combos).

I agree that zucchini probably would work awesome. When I lived with my folks (who always grew zucchini) we make zucchini chips from the overgrown zuchinis (remove seeds and cut thinly). The were awesome with dip.

They're a bit like dried apples though in that they soften as you chew them. They're so much like dried apples, that I bet they'd be really good with cinnamon and sweetener.
  • I've had kale with cinnamon and splenda, but i sprinkled the splenda after they were baked. I've also dried(dehydrater) kale with splenda and cinnamon. Both were delicious.
  • I also vote Zucchini. I've made these a few times.

Also, I made chips out of brussel sprouts a while back and they were excellent. Ill see if iI can find that recipe...
  • I made zucchini chips the other day with cinnamon and splenda. Very tasty. I preheated my oven to 200 (europe), probably 350 american temp.. Slice the zucchini on a grater (mine has a blade)/mandolin. I put the slices in a plastic bag and sprayed in some olive oil, shake them about to coat each slice. I then put the slices in one layer onto an oven tray lined with baking paper. Sprinkled on cinnamon and splenda. Baked for about 20 mins. Keep checking so they don't burn. It is still a work in progress I don't have much luck getting them all crispy at the same time. But, I eat them anyway. I also make these chips with garlic powder, chill powder and salt. Hope it's helpful.
