Possibly dumb question, but I'm curious anyway...

  • Does your height change at all when you lose weight? Granted, I'm 22 years old, so I figure all my growing is done. However, if everything else in my body would change, why wouldn't that either? Is it possible that losing weight would actually make me gain an inch in height? Or maybe I'll just look taller, lol. I think this is just wishful thinking on my part. XD
  • Well I know that when I'm heavier even when I am standing straight I am not as straight up as I am when I am lighter. The girls kinda pull me forward! I'm pretty sure you aren't actually going to grow by losing weight (your growth plates should be closed by now) but I think you might see a small (half inch?) increase as your carriage, gait, and posture shift.
  • Your height will not change. You get smaller width-wise because you are losing fat, but your bones will not grow longer as this has nothing to do with fat loss.

You will most likely look taller because you will appear to be more "long" when you are thin, relative to your width...but your height won't actually change.
  • Hey, I'll be happy to give you a couple of inches...

  • Who hasn't thought, 'if only I was a couple inches taller, I'd be skinnier' FREELANCE, I'll take some
I already feel taller than I actually am, because I'm 'fat'. Maybe that's weird. So, I wonder if I'll feel shorter.. hmm, good question though!

Hey, I was wondering, if our feet shrink... in length. Since, having babies, mine grew a lot. I wonder if that changes with weight loss ... ???
  • I gained a solid inch in losing my first fifty pounds - I was so heavy that it was literally pulling my frame down and outward. I measured 5'2" for years and now I am 5'3" and some change. Some of it is posture changes, but some is literally my spine and joints being less compressed. It's not actually that uncommon to see slight gains in height with weight loss, it just depends on the person.
  • I've gained and lost 50-60 lbs a couple times in my life and so far, my height hasn't changed.
  • I don't know if it's necessarily the weight loss, but you MAY get better posture from doing certain exercises. In turn you'll measure a little taller because you're standing up to your true height.

I've heard of people "gaining" inches from yoga, pilates and weight training.

I can speak from experience. I've gained a little over an inch since weight training.
  • I hope not! Im ft tall already.. i dont want to get taller...i want to get shorter!
  • I gained back an inch that I lost about 10 years ago when I started to go through menopause. I was 5'7" tall as a young adult who was in the normal weight range. I was the same as an overweight adult until I hit about 50 and started menopause, so I never chalked it up to the weight, but to age. Last year, after losing about 50 pounds and several months of yoga, I was back up to 5'7" again. I think its the exercise more than the weight loss - at least for me.

  • I haven't gained any inches & I would definitely have loved to have added an inch or two, but you might be one of the lucky ones!
