"Walking" To Colorado Springs, Co

  • Beginning on Friday, March 9, some of us over 50 gals are starting a "walk" to Colorado Springs, CO.

You are invited to join at any time. We do not all need to begin together. It is about our "journey."

We begin from our hometowns. We each post 1 message and update that message everyday. This is not a discussion thread. Basically, it is a place to log our exercise.

About "miles" - you can come up with any formula you want to count your miles. I will be counting 1 mile for every 10 minutes of exercise. Please feel free to use whatever formula is good for you.

This is NOT a competition thread. It is all about increasing our exercising and having some fun along the way.

I just arrived in Columbia, MO (1022 miles from home).
The traditional symbol of the University of Missouri is the row of six Ionic columns. The Columns once supported the portico of Academic Hall, the first building erected on campus. Academic Hall was built between 1840 and 1843 from plans drawn by A. Stephen Hills, designer of the Missouri State Capitol. It consisted of a domed central section of three stories with two wings and housed both educational and administrative facilities. Brick for the building was fired on campus. Limestone for the Columns was obtained from the nearby Hinkson Creek Valley and was hauled to the building by ox-drawn carts.

On Jan. 9, 1892, Academic Hall was destroyed by fire and the Columns were all that remained. In August 1893 the Board of Curators voted to remove the Columns, considering them not only unsafe but unsightly. However, supporters of the Columns rallied to their defense, and after inspection showed the foundations were safe, the Board voted to retain them in December 1893. Now the Columns stand as a beloved part of MU's campus.

  • I'm at Colorado Springs, will enjoy the rest after that long walk. Lynn,,,I'm not coming back to meet anyone, just too busy right now with harvesting the garden, freezing, etc. Bruce pick all the apples off the 'sweet apple' tree this morning and I have 1/2 the apples peeled, sliced and frozen. I do make some applesauce too, but today I just froze them raw. I spent the whole day doing that and not looking forward to tomorrow, will finish processing them. I bagged up two huge bags of them and pawned off on the neighbors down the road from us.
Hi Gylnne and Isabella....keep on truckin'. Thanks Lynn!

  • I'll be starting my journey in Central Newfoundland, near Grand Falls-Windsor. I'll be "walking" on the Trans Canada Highway (red).

    ********************

First day on the road. I'm going to bike to Gander International Airport in Gander, Newfoundland and fly to the mainland. Not sure where yet but I'll have several days to make up my mind and make "reservations." I'm enjoying everyone's pictures.

    September 03: 12.14 km
    September 04: 12.15 km

    Sub-total in Newfoundland: 109.21 km
    Sub-total mainland: 1090.70 km
    Total to Date: 1200.33 KM

I'm home again and able to get on my bike every day. I'll be the last one to Colorado Springs as I'm still so far away!
  • I am 623 miles from Colorado Springs. The last time I was there was about 4 years ago. I will use the following scale: 15 minutes = 1 mile.

I will begin my journey in Billings, Mt. Here are a couple pictures:

The first is a view of Billings from the "rims". The city sits in the middle of a large valley.

The second is a picture of the buffalo jump bluffs across the river. Natives used to herd buffalo over the edge to harvest them. The Yellowstone River is the longest naturally (not diverted or flow managed in any way) flowing river in the US. It is the river of my childhood as my parent's farm borders the river about 3 miles east of this picture.

3/19: I did 1.5 miles this morning. I just walked past Riverfront park
3/20: I did 2 miles this morning. I just walked past my work, headed east on I90
3/21: I did 2 miles this morning. I will be walking past the area of MIL house. I plan a razzberry salute on the way!
3/22: 2 miles this morning. I just crossed the main bridge of the yellowstone. Buffalo jump bluff on my right
3/26: 4 miles this morning. I am just at the turn to start down I90, heading toward Hardin, MT

    New start!
5/16: 3 miles today. I used my pedometer and kept a rough idea of time walking through the airports. We read the wrong sign and ended up in the wrong terminal. Wow, we hoofed it so we didn't miss our plane!
5/17: 2 miles this morning. My knee hurts after all the traveling...
5/18: 4 miles this morning. I was going to garden but it is raining.
5/20: 4 miles this morning. I better get going or it will take me two years!

    Total miles: 24.5

This is montana, still in the middle of nowhere. Rolling hills and antelope as I walk through the boundaries of the Crow Reservation.

  • Hi -

I'm joining in. I'm coming from a Chicago suburb that is 1083 miles away. I'm doing mostly the recumbent bike due to shoulder problems. I'm not going to use bike mileage cuz that gets me much farther than walking. I'm going to give myself 1 mile for every 10 minutes. Update - I gave myself a little time for walking all over airports and medical centers. I also counted my golf lessons - as well as the days I hadn't taken time to post. If I'm EVER going to get to Colorado (or even out of the state of Illinois) I'm going to have to change my scale. Is there a time limit on this? You are all doing so well! Keep up the good work!

  • Hello to my walking companions

    Starting 3-18-12

I am leaving from The Woodlands, Texas 937 ~ miles ~ http://mapq.st/wLbaN2. I am trying to come up with a scale (the Gayle Scale ~ LOL) for me. A mile for each minute seemed like cheating, other numbers seemed like it was taking me forever and was discouraging. My brain is tired tonight, so I don't know exactly how I would describe this ~ I did a little test and walked about 100 steps/minute, so I divide my number of steps by 100, then I divided my number of minutes by 5 for how many miles ~ and that came out with some kind of reasonable number.

Edited to take up less room.

March ~ 342 minutes of various exercises. (Walking, pool therapy, step pedometer, bicycle riding, stretching, treadmill)

April ~ 336 minutes of various exercises.

May ~ 30 minutes (was probably more, but I stopped/kept forgetting to wear the step pedometer)

    June ~ 150 minutes

    July ~ 130 minutes

    August ~ 363 minutes

    September ~ 55 minutes

    October ~ 791 minutes

    November ~ 1100 minutes

So, by that scale ~ I have gone 659 miles so far. Getting closer. Have to recheck my calculations ~ looking back, I think I messed this up. Will have to fix when I get some time.

    December ~ 266,183 steps

    2013

    January ~ 237,231 steps (474 miles)

    February ~ 278,058 steps (556 miles)

    March ~ 307,965 steps (616 miles)

    April
    4-1-13 ~ 11194

    4-17-13 ~ 12022
    4-18-13 ~ 10378
    4-19-13 ~ 13836
    4-20-13 ~ 7335
    4-21-13 ~ 8236
    4-22-13 ~ 9220
4-23-13 ~ 9676 ~ I sometimes forget to take the pedometer off when I go to bed at night ~ wonder how many of those steps are actually rolling around in bed at night ~ LOL.
    4-24-13 ~ 8142
    4-25-13 ~ 11016
    4-26-13 ~ 9924

    5-14-13 ~ 5686
    5-15-13 ~ 17
5-16-13 ~ 0 Something is not right with my pedometer
    5-17-13 ~
5-18-13 ~ 4827 ~ put on a different pedometer ~ now I am frustrated ~ why does one show 10000 and above some days, and this one not even 5000. Here I thought I wasn't such a slug ~ now I'm back to not so sure again.

    Hi, Gayle!
  • I'm almost there!

Somehow my recording post is listed two times, but I'm only updating the first one.

Is it just Gayle and me on the road now?
