Weight Loss Plateau

  • I started out weighing 298 pounds on 10/31/11 and have been dropping 3-4 pounds a week. I am currently fluctuating between 254 and 255 pounds. This is my THIRD trip at losing 100 pounds or more and it seems like everytime I get to 255 the scales STOP! It is like there is a wall there and I have to really WORK my *** off to get the scale to move even a 10th of a pound.

I walk 2 miles every day religiously and ride my stationary bike 4 miles daily at least 5 times a week. I am not eating any more or drinking any less.

I am frustrated. What have you done to get past your plateaus?
  • Oh...I want to hear the answers to this one too. I haven't been losing as fast as you but in 2011 lost a steady pound a week. Now since Christmas I've been absolutely stuck. Up a little, down a little, up a little, down a little. I've upped my exercise even more and my eating has been really good and I my measurements are still going down a bit so I may still be adding a bit of muscle but sure would like to see the numbers go more steadily down.
  • Hi Unicorn nice to meet you.

I really don't think mine is from muscle because I still got to much stomach and *** to lose. LOL
  • I'm in the middle of my first real plateau now. My feelings on it vacillate between "eh, my body knows what it's doing" and being completely furious and frustrated. I've been stuck between 144 and 150 since September. At this point, I don't know if my metabolism is so screwed up that 1200-1600 calories a day plus 45 minutes of walking/jogging every day really IS my set point (gosh I hope not. that would suck) or if I will suddenly start losing again. So I am right there with you.
  • It sounds like that the points where you could think about swapping some of those cardio workouts for strength training. Or change the cardio to something else -- swimming for instance.

Your body's grown expert at the walk and ride, so it's time to shake it up and challenge it again with a new way to move.

    HTH!

  • It happens. There was a 4 month period last year where I weighed in at 220, 221, 219 and 222 every day.

I kept going, though. And eventually I passed it on by. I lowered my calories that time. This last time, when I was stuck at 202/203 for a month, I upped my exercise. Now I'm past that one too and I'll keep going.

I always tell myself that I have to KEEP GOING or I will go back to 'before' and I'm never ever ever ever going back to that.

    Never!

This. x1000, lol. I always have to change something for my body to respond. This past time I added HIIT to my workouts, and poof, I moved on.

Oh believe me once the pool opens at my complex my butt will be in it probably 5 days a week swimming laps. I love to swim laps but the water is still a tad to cold.
  • I made it over the hump!! I weighed 253.8 this morning!!!
  • First, we need a "like" button. I keep looking for it. Second - my advise was going to be to just hang in there.

  • Thanks Lin!!
  • Way to go Small Steps! I too was down a bit yesterday 271.1. We'll see if it stays there!
