  • Hi everyone. Another question. I know we are not allowed to use extracts or baking powder but lots of yummy recipes call for these. Has it made a huge difference in your losses if you used them and did you stop using them because the scale was stalling? I never used these before and I am afraid to, especially because the scale isn't too nice with me as it is. lol Thanks!
  • I bought the vanilla without corn syrup and I do use baking powder, especially for the waffle recipes (YUMMY!) They are allowed and ok. I would suggest going to FinnSteven's post from Finland because he has tons of recipes and they are all okay for Phase 1! So go ahead and indulge in something different. Made my variety a lot better.

The thing is, NO, they are not allowed. They aren't on the sheet and I asked my coach and she says NO. I see all those yummy recipes and I feel like giving in. lol
  • I have used extracts with no alcohol. Vanilla,, rum, mint..etc. I have never used baking powder though.

Do you have suggestions on finding alcohol free extracts? I've never seen them before.
  • I've used them the entire time I've been on the program and they haven't hindered my loss.

I went to the local health/natural food store and found them there. I'm sure you could get them anywhere.
  • I use baking powder everyday for my crispy cereal pancake and It hsn't hurt my losses any.

    Awesome...thanx!
  • Hmm...

To substitute vanilla you could try:
Almond extract, rum, amaretto, Grand Marnier, framboise, or any of dozens of other extracts, essences, brandies, or liqueurs.

But since vanilla extract is a basic household item, and has a distinct taste, it's pretty hard to substitute it. (And cupcakes will taste better with it.)

And for the baking powder, just use baking soda - i'm 99.9% sure that it will turn out just fine.
  • I would think that the amount of baking powder or soda that we use in the recipes wouldn't hurt the losses. Steven has done tons of research with the recipes and even in the cookbook put out by IP have these ingredients in them. SO with that being said, I would say they are OK to use. But again this is ONLY MY OPINION!
  • Thanks everyone! I will take your comments into consideration. However, the scale isn't moving too fast these days so I'm still afraid. We'll see. Have a nice day!!

I won't use them because I'm really sticking to the diet...but a friend ignored the fact that extracts have alcohol in them and chose to put them in her coffee and still loss. Had she not used the extracts she would have loss more quickly...but she still loss and was happier doing it...
  • Plus, you could use real vanilla bean (a little more costly)...but you'll get a better vanilla flavor...more natural than vanilla extract... just sayin'
  • Baking powder is allowed as it's 0/0/0. 1/8 of a tsp of Clabber Girl double acting baking powder has 0 calories, 0 fat, 65 mg sodium, 0 carbs and 0 protein.
