  • Hey guys. I just got back from the grocery store and theres a lot of packaged healthy meals such as vh steamers, healthy choice, lean cuisine, etc and i was wondering if anyone on this site has ever made a thread for reviewing these meals?

i didnt feel like cooking today and these meals seemed to be the solution but i know some of them are better than others, so i was thinking if there isnt already a thread for it, we could review the meals and we've had? Does this go against the advertising rule? I didnt think it would since its just reviewing or suggesting foods to try out? i dont know just wondering

i figured it would be a good idea cause i hate buying a healthy food item to food out the quality sucks or it taste/looks nasty
  • I gave up on the normal section in the grocery store for truly healthy frozen meals and now buy either Amy's or Kashi frozen meals in the "health food" section of the store. I seek out meals that have no high fructose corn syrup or unpronouncable additives and preservatives. Additionally, Kashi particularly offers 100% vegan alternatives which is nice for me since I can't have dairy and...Kashi meals are delicious. Amy's are delicious as well but many of Amy's meals have dairy (cheese, usually) but for most people that isn't an issue.
  • i dont know if we have kashi here it sounds like something to try out if i can find it.
  • I make my own freezer meals because it's cheaper, healthier, and a time-saver, but if I'm stuck and need a meal, I have gotten kashi meals or an evol vegan burrito.

There are quite a few canned soups that aren't too high in sodium if you take a look at the organic section too.
  • In Europe we had some mixed vegetables in steamer packages (for microwave). If at all they had only a little bit of butter or oil in it. Anything like that out there (Canada if possible)?
  • Hungry Girl has a food award Link of the best tasting Frozen foods.
  • I don't mind these meals on occaison (and I can't afford kashi's or amy's) but it isn't enough food for me. That is why I too make my own freezer meals.

Do you have a brand name I can look for? What supermarket?
  • Amy's and Kashi are the only prepared meals I'll touch. Too much I can't pronounce in the others.

A big salad is a good "I don't feel like cooking" solution... that's what I usually do .

We have them in the US . Green Giant is one brand that comes to mind. Look in the freezer section.

  • You can get the steam pakage of vegetables at Safeway, Raleys, Lucky and other major supermarkets. I know I have had GreenGiant. I live in California so do not know names of stores in other states.

I'm queen of the quick cooking meals, I swear. If it takes longer than 15 minutes, I'm probably not going to make it unless I have a lazy day to do whatever. This is exactly why my freezer is full of food.
  • One of my favorite don't want to cook meals is:

Open a can of white beans (or any beans), dump in a skillet (or bowl and microwave). Put in as much seasoning as I feel like. Sometimes I slosh part of a can of diced tomatoes in there, or a real tomato if I get fancy. Or parsley. Fresh parsley is great in this. And tons of garlic.

Throw a ham steak on the George Foreman grill with a bunch of sliced white onions. Grill until onions are soft and steak is warmed through (like 2 minutes).

Slice up ham steak, scoop beans in a bowl, top with ham and onions. Serve with handful of salad greens on the side, topped with light dressing and maybe a crouton or two.

This can be super low-cal if you watch serving size. A half cup of white beans is 80 cal, so I usually have 3/4 c. for 120, and 2 oz of ham is 60 cal, so I usually have 4 oz for 120. Even allowing for a few extra calories for the onions and possible tomatoes, still around 250 cal!
