Can we substitute our olive oil allowance by some nuts?

  • Hello,

    I know I am going NUTS !

I am wondering if we can substitute our daily olive oil allowance which is 1-2 tsp per day by some nuts such as peanuts, almonds or walnuts, I mean, if we eat just a little bit, what equals in calories approximately to 2 tsp of oil, of course not to eat a whole lot, just a little bit.

What do you think? Would that be ok or would it stall our weight loss?
  • Well, the protocol does say no nuts. That aside, I think the real quesiton is whether you think you can really limit your consumption of nuts to the equivalent of a tsp or so of Olive Oil? 1 tsp of EVOO is around 40 calories or so, that would be what, 4 nuts?

I know (from experience), that I won't just stop there :/
  • Hehe...

Yeah that would be tough to stop, but not completely impossible

I mean if I know I can, maybe I will opt to take few nuts instead of the EVOO, but I am not quite sure.
  • No. It is not a substitution. Olive oil is lacking in carbs. Nuts have carbs, fats, and protein. It might not slow you down but, don't look at it as a substitution.
  • Well, if you want to be OP then I would say no. My papers explicitly say no nuts. There are carbs in nuts, not in EVOO. Even if you go the unsalted plain old variety, the nutritional composition is different. I, for one, was thinking Atkinsesque when I thought I could have nuts or nut butters. I would say that if you can find something else to satisfy the craving that IS IP, go that way. Get some sugar free peanut butter syrup or have part of a restricted peanut bar or those peanut soy puff thingies. I just cannot, in good faith, encourage you to go down the slippery slope of having a prohibited item and then hoping you eat just 4.

You have to live with it though, perhaps it is a chance you want to take. Just think, if you have a slow loss week do you want to have to wonder if it was those 4 dumb nuts???
  • OK then No nuts for me, especially now that I have to stick religiously to the program after the big cheat I had over the weekend, I have to stay strong and OP 100%.

Thank you very much for replying me everyone You are all great ! I wish I know you personally one by one. (in a way I feel I do though )
  • Some one smarter than me might know why this is but when I was on WW I also had to take 2tsp of oil a day. Don't recall the exact resin why but it was important that it was in pourable form.
  • I know that you have to maintain a minimum level of fat in your diet so, that could be an answer. I also know that for the nutrients to be broken out of dark green leafy vegetables properly they need the presence of fat. Maybe that is another part?

I am sure there are many other answers too.
  • Have you tried the regular roasted soy nuts (not the same as puffs)? I find them a great substitute when I'm feeling nutty
  • When I have that craving I use sesame oil on my salad...not completely sure if that's ok, but it is still just fat...

Vitamins A,D,E, and K are fat soluble vitamins. Without a certain amount of fat in your diet you are unable to utilize these vitamins.
