The Duck Parable

  • Yesterday I was in church and my preacher told a parable about a duck that I thought was so relevant to my weight loss journey, and I wanted to share it with you ladies.

There was a duck who was flying south for the winter with a whole group of other ducks. On his flight, he looked down and saw a farm house. So, he stopped to get something to eat. He decided he would stay at the farm house and eat until the rest of the ducks migrated back home; and then he would fly back with them. So, the next year came around and the pack of ducks flew overhead. The farm-house duck was about ready to fly, but he decided he would just wait one more time. After all, he had all he needed here at the farm house. So, the next year came and the ducks flew overhead again, and the farm house duck almost flew but decided not today. Maybe next year. Finally, when the ducks came back, he looked up. He decided he was going to do it-he would fly again! But, he only got as high as the farm house roof before he plopped back down on the ground. He became so fat from the food that he couldn't fly.

My preacher said the moral of the story was: what freedom are you giving up because of your lifestyle?
  • Great story, a lot of truth in it.
  • Wow! What freedoms am I giving up by indulging myself night after night in pleasure? How true. Thanks for this.
  • Thanks for sharing that story with us!
  • We are truly free when we turn loose that which binds us. The key is in realizing that we have the control to turn loose or hang on - not someone or something else. Unfortunately, too many of us are like that duck; but we don't have to be!
  • Thanks for sharing, I really liked that.
I have recently been set free from 35 years of binge eating, and it's so amazing to me how a habit that seemed so very comfortable was actually ruining my life in so many ways.
  • Good parable!
  • Well, the duck coulda took a truck...like a smuck chasing a hockey puck, OK...no such luck...
