Ma'am, I think you'd prefer the fried chicken

  • I live in a small town about 30 minutes away from Houston--never had a problem ordering healthier options in fast food places (when I used to eat at them) and regular restaurants. Our local grocery stores all have what I lovingly call the "hippy" aisle, which is where I get all of my harder to find items (organic, gluten free, soy based products, quinoa, other hard to find staples).
That being in said, just about every fast food place in Texas will offer jalapenos as a sandwich topping
  • Quote: During my recent week-long sojourn in Charleston, when I ate every meal out but breakfast -- I went to Harris Teeter & Whole Foods in a nearby suburb & got stuff to keep in my room fridge for that -- I found to my delight that the city has a very serious food scene. Maybe it's atypical of the small-town south, but I did really well there & had no issues with making good choices.

I came home with some locally produced tea, a truly gorgeous bag of huge raw pecans, a little jar of Tupelo Honey (I was singing Van Morrison all day after I bought that one) & some spice packets from The Spice & Tea Exchange (sassafrass, mesquite and sumac) & that made me quite happy.

Also ate fabulous seafood for dinner every day of the week, except for one night dinner at 82 Queen, when I had a really fabulous spaghetti squash dish, which I recommend.

I also recommend High Cotton and Husk as good places to eat, and for something more casual, Hyman's, Gilligan's and Toast.

I go to school at the College of Charleston. I love the food and restaurants here! I'm glad you had a great visit and I encourage others to visit our historic city! I love gilligans because they broil their fish upon request and its fantastic! Hymans has the best fresh fish around, but I have to tell them not to bring the peanuts to the table or i'll eat the whole bowl!
