I lost some weight but for the wrong reason

  • Hello everyone

I just found out I lost about 7 pounds which puts me right under the 200 mark. This is great news BUT I lost it without any proper diet or exercise. I recently went through a lot and was very sad therefore I rarely ate. I am going to start a proper die and a exercise schedule but will this weight come back since I lost it the wrong way?
  • I think it could be possible because depending on how long you went, you be in starvation and may need to rehydrate which alone can put lbs on in water, but the thing is is that usually the first couple pounds we lose are usually from water not fat. My understanding is that many have a big drop in water weight the first week or so. But that doesn't mean you can't pick up and push right past that, with clean eating, hydrating and exercise.
  • You lost some fat and a lot of water. The water will come right back. The fat will only come back if you eat more calories than your body needs to function.

Clean eating and exercise only affect your long term health and have nothing to do with fat loss or gain.
  • Your body doesn't know why you lost weight. You lost because you ate fewer calories, if you go back to eating the way you did before you will gain weight. No matter how you lose weight if you go back to old eating habits you will gain weight.
  • Thanks for the advice, I worry that this weight will come back and if anything add on the pounds. But I am just going to be on top of my weight, my eating habits, excises routine. Thanks
  • A few months ago during my weight loss journey I had the flu really badly and was barely eating. I didn't weight myself during that time (I could barely get out of bed!) but afterwards I did weight myself and I had a pretty big loss AND I maintained that loss. That being said the food that I did eat during that time was healthy food (even though it was very little) and I made sure to drink a ton of liquids.

If you're really worried about it why not start a healthy diet that you can maintain and incorporate exercise into your life and just ignore the scale for a couple of weeks. You'll probably jump right after any regain period and once you weigh yourself again you'll probably see a net loss (as long as you stick to your diet/exercise).
  • If you had lost like 20 or more lbs that way I might be worried, but 7 isn't much- your body will be okay.
  • just focus on eating healthy and exercising as much as you can so that calorie out > calorie in!
  • I hope you are feeling better.
