Is PCOS & Insulin resistance the same thing?

  • or different? Usually when I see one mentioned the other is mentioned too, I'm kinda confused.
Are there tests to see if you have either of them or is it based on symptoms only? What type of doctor would you go to to find out?
  • Symptoms of PCOS are pretty much the diagnosis of it. And IR(Insulin Resistance) is one one of the symptoms. Your Dr. or OBGY can do an ultrasound to verify that you do actually have ovarian cysts, but you can have PCOS and not have ovarian cysts. I would highly recommend checking out these sites, which have helped me, greatly, in the understanding of PCOS.

  • Men can be be insulin resistant. So, no they are not the same thing.

IR or Metabolic Syndrome can be one of the complications of PCOS. in addition to the links provided by Gelene, check out this one from The National Instututes of Health
