What is this 20 calorie hot chocolate I keep reading about?

  • I've been looking through the forums here, and I've seen a couple threads where people mention a 20 calorie hot chocolate that they drink to curb hunger. But, no one ever specifically mentions what it is. I didn't want to necro an old thread, so I hope you guys don't mind if I made a new one. What is this, and where can I get it?

I am just starting my lifestyle change, and I need something to fill me up when I am hungry in between meals.

Thanks in advance for the help!
  • I don't drink powdered hot chocolate drinks but I think if you buy the standard diet hot chocolate mixes from the store they are around 20 calories.
  • Diet Swiss Miss has only 25 calories, but (out of curiosity) I just googled "diet hot cocoa recipes" and found several recipes (they're all pretty similar):

    1 TBSP unsweetened cocoa powder
3 TBSP Splenda (or other artificial sweetener)
    1/4 tsp vanilla extract
    1 cup boiling water
  • Hmmm. I'm surprised there's no non-fat dried milk powder in that recipe.

I buy the Swiss Miss diet hot cocoa at Wal-Mart, but it should be at most grocery stores.
I don't use it as a hunger aid. Just for when I want something sweet after supper.
  • Many of the higher quality hot cocoas are just cocoa and sugar. I've looked on their canisters and they say just add water, milk or non-dairy milk. I've made my own using unsweetened cocoa powder and I usually use half almond milk, half water.

Non-fat dried milk powder is going to up the calories significantly.

The recipe does suggest using part or all of your milk allowance to replace some or all of the water if you so desire (but that of course, increases the calories).

Even though the processed varieties list whey or dry-milk, to get under the 25 calorie limit, the amount is going to be very minimal. The equivalent of no more than a tablespoon of skim milk (5 to 6 calories).

So it you want, add a tablespoon of skim milk and there you go, bringing the calories to 25 or so. About the same as the Swiss Miss diet hot cocoa.
