B12 shots??

  • I was thinking about getting Vitamin B12 shots done with a doctor in my town. My father in law did thm a few years ago as well as changing his diet an started to exercse and he lost a god deal of weight.

Has anyone else had experiene with B12 shots? Did you have a good experience or bad one? Where did you get our B12 shots?

  • Have you had a test for B12 deficiency? I have. I went to my regular physician, asked for regular blood work (cholesterol, blood sugar, B12, etc). I was perfectly normal. If you don't have a deficiency, then B12 shots do nothing.

If you are worried about B12 but not sure if you are deficient, you can always take B12 vitamins.

Also forgot to add that there are various signs of B12 deficiency but one of them is depression (and also loss of appetite). So generally if you are deficient, you may be experiencing depression and B12 can help with mood. It doesn't help with weight loss though. There may also be a psychological factor in that if you think they help with weight loss, then they will.
  • I've heard (don't quote meh...lol) that B12 helps with energy. I take 5 hour energy shots which are loaded with all the B's (niacin, B6 and B12)...

It does seem to give me lots and lots of energy...more than a cup of coffee...waaayy more (and I've been drinking coffee for years so I know the difference).

Seems at $2/shot, that may be the cheapest way to see how b12 can or cannot help you.
  • I am slightly low in b 12 and have been using a sublingual (under the young) from trader joe's and an iron supplement called floradix, which is a plant based iron that has almost none of the side effects of regular iron supplements. The combination of the two have made my anima go away, low normal, and I have a ton more energy.

My point is that shots are expensive and most of the time one has togototheoffi e for them unless you can Do then yourself. Try the cheap rout first if you can.

Diet plus exercise plus anything will make you lose weight.
  • I had gastric bypass 26 years ago and one of the effects is that you can't absorb b12. I take sublingual drops. I get stupid and slow without them. When I have been checked since I take them on a daily basis I am usually high. I have also heard that B complex vitamins are good for weight loss.
  • I think my b-complex vitamins are helping. I can't prove it, but I know I feel less energetic when I don't take them.
  • I haven't had a B12 shot, but I started taking supplements a while ago because I realized that as an almost vegan, I wasn't getting any vitamin B12 in my diet on most days. I noticed a huge difference in my energy levels, but I likely had very low levels. If your levels are normal, it might not change much though. I've also had an increase in appetite, which I didn't realize until right now might be because of the supplement since I had no idea that decreased appetite was a symptom of deficiency!

Personally, I would try an over the counter B12 supplement before the shot unless you have GI issues that might prevent you from absorbing the vitamin.
  • My sister was seeing a bariatric specialist and told her doctor that she thought B-12 shots helped her lose weight. The specialist agreed to see if my sister was right and gave her a B-12 shot every week. She lost one pound every time she had one.
