Veggie Burgers & Tofu

  • Okay, so I know some of you eat these, so I'm assuming they're okay to eat?? Like the low carb Morning Star products, or Boca burgers, or just plain tofu.
My quesiton is...do they count as a protein, or a veggie? My Morning Star chicken patties are completely made from veggies, no real meat...same as my burgers...so I'm just a little curious on this

This has been an area of some controversy in the past, but if you look at the Phase 3 explanation tables, they list these items as protein. I ate them only occasionally during Phases 1 and 2, more often using low-carb count tofu than veg burgers... usually as a protein for stir fry.

During Phase 3, I brought back the Morning Star bacon (love), and now in Phase 4, added back veg burgers (various brands) to the dinner rotation.

If you use during weight loss phases, just watch the carbs.

    Thanks Yoda
I made sure everything I bought was 3 carbs per serving or less. I just wondered, because I really struggle with veggies. I try all these things that everyone else loves, and seriously, I can't do it. There been like maybe 2 days that I have made it to the four cups of veggies. I can eat lettuce like crazy, and the protein isn't a problem, but getting the veggies really is Idk what to do about it.

Well, they ARE veg, as well... I think you could make an adjustment to your veg count without going too far afield. Can you also throw some spinach (or other greens) into your salad and crank up the veg that way?

I try to do spinach in my salads whenever I can. Or even spinach as a salad. But even then, I can't get more than two cups. I do mushrooms a lot too, but cucumbers and zucchini and kale? Just can't. Maybe it's the deep fried southerner in me, but I can't seem to make it taste good. No matter what I do to it. When I make kale, i swear it tastes like paper. I love eggplant too, but it's a restricted. Sometimes I can do the turnips, but sometimes, I just can't. I tried them mashed last night and died a little bit on the inside. And salads and mushrooms are starting to get old...bleh. I need to hire a chef.
  • As a veg I count them as protein Tofu is definitely protein in my books.

Taylor, try cubing up the turnip kind of small (like dice size) and roasting it with a bit of oil and herbs and then add salt when they are done. I also make kale chips, and they are way too easy to get down unfortunately for me. A bit high in carbs.
  • I have avoided the veggie burgers totally because of the carbs, but, if I had them I'd count them as a protein. I do eat tofu, but make sure to get the light variety that has fewer carbs.

I try to incorporate the veggies into some type of dish whenever I can, almost like tricking myself into eating them, instead of having them separate and plain. Some things I've tried:
An inside out cabbage roll with ground beef, shredded cabbage, wf ketchup, a little splend and green pepper
I made a big batch of spinach and garlic stuffed mushrooms and froze them, it's easy to reheat a few at a time.
"Potato Salad" with cauliflower instead of the potatoes.
Fried rice with cauliflower "rice". I add a little cooked chicken and this is a yummy main dish.
