Back up your computer! A cautionary tale...

  • Recently my laptop died. I should have known it was going to happen as it was taking forever to boot up and making weird noises. One day, I just wouldn't turn on at all and I got the dreaded "error on hard disk, boot drive failure" message.

One of the files that I kept on the computer was an excel file with my weight loss tally each week. It went back all the way to 2007.

What I liked most about it was going back in time and thinking about what weight I was during certain events in my life. For example, right around this time last year I visited a friend of mine on Cape Cod and noticed from the weight record that I was 80 pounds more then than now.

Now, that file is lost. My computer guy at work is going to see if he can recover files off the hard drive but he told me it doesn't look good. I feel like I've lost a big part of my history.

Not to mention all the progress pictures, etc that I only kept on my hard drive.

So, just keep in mind that if you have files you want to save, please back them up on a server some place or else burn them onto a CD. You never know when your computer is going to bite the bust.
  • Awwww Matt, I am so sorry that has happened. I hope that the IT guy can save your files. Thanks for sharing your very hard lesson.
  • Wow - I am sorry to hear that. I will keep my fingers crossed and hope that you can retrieve your files!
  • Oh gee...I am so sorry to hear this. I hope they can find your info somehow. Thanks for the reminder.
  • awwwww (((((hugs))))))) thanks for the advice
  • awww Matt, I'm so sorry. That is VERY upsetting, to say the least.
  • Sorry to hear about that.

We have a back up system already in play. We use a program called Acronis True Image Home, every night at about 3 am everything is backed up to an external hard drive. Also about once a month, I back up all the pictures & important documents I took over the month on a thumb drive that I keep stored in a fire & water proof safe.

I've learned my lesson as well, I've lost everything once before.
  • I'm sorry you lost your HD and the records of your progress but at least you didn't actually lose that progress!

And I see you are getting closer to goal too!!!
  • Matt I clicked on your name and then posts by Matt and they are your posts. I wasn't sure which older ones had pictures in I didn't look. Not sure if there is some way to put them on a disk? Good Luck.
  • Matt I should have said look at all threads started by Matt.
