Major scale inaccuracies???

  • Okay, I've had this non-digital scale for awhile now. Other people have recently used it and it worked fine, putting them at the weight they knew they were. For months, when I weighed myself, it would put me, give or take, between 190 and 195. I know I am overweight. I'm trying to do something about that. I was thinking I only had to lose 40 lbs or so.

Well I went to the gym and used digital scales they have there. Much to my surprise, the scale read 257 lbs!!!!!!!!! That is a 62 lb difference!!!!!!!

It was REALLY discouraging to see I have farther to go than I thought, BUT, it doesn't make sense to me... why is my scale at home saying I'm around 195, and it's weighed other people accurately? Plus, I do look more around 190, not 257. I am not trying to insult anyone who is 257, not in any way. But I'm pretty sure I'm not 257. I don't understand what;s going on.
  • That would put me at needing to lose 100 lbs or more, and that doesn't sound right. I'm so confused right now.

    Plus, I wear a size 16/18 (american).
  • Find another scale. Call around, ask your friend who own scales they are confident in and go weigh on that one. Or, buy a new one and go from there.

    190 vs. 257 is a major jump.
  • Thanks, that is great advice. My grandma has a really good scale I'll ask to borrow. Out of curiosity, what is your size, if you don't mind sharing. I am at 5'9 as well. I was thinking if I compare to someone who is around the weight I think that I am, according to my old scale, and also the height, I might get sort of an estimate of which scale was the more accurate.
  • if there is no other scale to use immediately then call your dr and make an appt. You can use the drs scale to compare the 2 weights. If 260 is right then demand a full blood work up because obviously you gained weight and quickly.

Weighing in on different scales can drive you insane. I weighed 202 in my bathroom monday and 207 at the dr. his scale is probably more accurate, but I go with my scale for my records since I'm not weighing in at the dr weekly

Also stick something on the scale that you know the weight of (dumbells maybe) and see if it weighs it accurately. If you choose to do this I would still weigh in on another scale but it might give you a partial answer right away so you're not driving yourself crazy while you wait. I'm sure it'd drive me batty! (though knowing me I'd have run out and bought a new scale right away!)
  • Holey Moley! It is one thing to see a 5-10lb difference between different scales - but not 60. Something is wrong somewhere.
  • That is odd. You should definitely check a third scale. 190 to 257 is crazy! I don't know if this will be much help, but when I was 190 I was a 16/18 and I'm 5'2. I had a friend who was 5'5 and 184 and she wore a size 15 juniors, and my cousin who is 5'5 weighs 168 and wears a size 10/12 juniors.
  • Wow, that must have been a shocker!

    I'd put money down that you're at 190-195. I'm 5'7-5'8, and when I was 183 I was wearing 13's (should have been 14's). 190 and 15/16 sounds about right.

Digital scales are not always more accurate, as long as a non-digital scale is zeroed correctly, there's actually less that can go wrong with it than a digital scale. Plus, if that digi scale was at the gym, think how many people are getting on it all the time, it's quite possible that it is just funked up and spitting out crazy numbers.

I'd weigh in on somebody else's scale, if the number is nowhere close to either, get a new scale (for a decent basic scale, you can get one for like $30).
  • at my heighest weight i was 259 wearing a tight size 18 .. and im 5'6 and a half

being 5'9 and 257 sound like a size 18 is about right if you where 190, at 5'9 it would make more sense if you where about a size 14 but depending on how your shaped diffrent people hold their weight differentley ...
  • At 210, I was wearing 18's.
    At 190, 16's.
    At 175, 14's.
  • If you weighed yourself closely in time on both scales, then one of them is seriously inaccurate. The easiest way to sort this out is to weigh yourself on a 3rd scale, if you can (preferably one that someone can testify is accurate).

    Good luck!
  • at 210, I'm a size 16
  • I'm 5'3" and 205lb and fit into a size 18.
  • Is it possible your home scale only weighs up to a certain weight? I remember the non-digital one we had when I was a kid only went up to 200. I'd find a third scale to know for sure. It's possible the one at the gym needed new batteries or something...they take a lot more abuse than home scales. Whatever you do, don't get discouraged!

If it helps, I'm 5'9", actually and oddly enough weigh 257, and I wear 16/18 tops and 20 bottoms.
  • I'm anxious to know what happened!
