Do you still look overweight at a size 12?

I'm the last one to offer easy platitudes about learning to love yourself & the importance of paying attention only to what's right for you personally, never mind the people around you, but that's what I'm wrestling with. "Normal" and "average" are defined by one's peer group, and that peer group is ever-changing (the neighborhood, the office, the Pilates class, the crowd at the mall), so you have to make your own decisions about your health & appearance, set your own True North on your own personal compass & stick to it. Or it will swing constantly, depending who's standing next to you, or who you just saw on TV or onstage, and you will never feel contented with yourself.
True, true, true. Right now my 16 are lose and 14 are within 5#. I look lovely now because I am healthy. I have more 14s and that is where I am heading. Don't know about wanting to wear 12s. I know a lot of women get concerned about what dress size they wear. I do not.

    Best wishes on your journey.
  • I'm 5'7" and just got back into my old size 12s today at 160. My face and top look slim to me; I'm wearing a size M comfortably.

Do I look overweight? Probably not. But I think I still look like I could stand to lose through my hips and thighs.

Everyone is just so different, though. Because look - you are 2" shorter than me and weigh 12 pounds more than me, but we are wearing the same size pants. So we must be proportioned very differently. I am definitely a pear shape. Also, when I weighed 172, I was wearing tight 14s. I would think that if we were the same weight (172) and I was 2" taller than you, then I would be wearing smaller pants than you -- but clearly that wasn't the case!

ETA: I just went back and read your original post and saw your stats -- you have done such an incredible job losing weight; how inspiring!! I'm sure you look awesome, and you should carry that with incredible pride!!
  • I have maybe a size 10/12 upper body, but my waist and hips are just now fitting properly into size 14 pants. I figure I must look overweight to other people, because I know I'm still 25 lbs or so from a healthy weight for my height... but I think I look awesome (and can't wait until I lose more and look even more awesome)! This morning's weigh-in brought me to my lowest weight ever, so even though I know I'm far from a healthy weight and I'm still a 14, I almost feel skinny, because for me, this is the closest I've been to skinny since I was maybe 13!

I bet you look amazing at a size 12, and I think the most important thing is that you feel like you look amazing. Anyone who knows you will know how hard you've worked to get to this point, and even those that don't know how far you've come probably won't be looking at you and thinking you look fat. Celebrate being a 12!
  • Quote: Cali Doll hit it right on the nose, imho! Also, it's attitude! You're a 12! Be proud and WORK IT!!!

Currently I'm size 10, but a 12 when pants are low rise due to a saggy lower tummy from losing so much lbs. But none the less, I walk with a swagger in my step because I am proud of what I've accomplished and still working toward my goal!
Yay! I like when people agree with me. :-)

And, I also had my swagger the entire way down. LOL! I felt pretty freaking amazing at size 14, too! It's funny, now when I look back at those size 14 pics, I can see that I was still "plump"...not bad looking but most definitely plump. Felt great, though!
  • I feel pretty good in my size 12's and don't feel overweight at all; of course, I used to be an 18/20. Sometimes I'll try on an old pair of jeans just for fun and just smile at how I can't keep them up without holding onto them.
  • I've been in a 14 for a while, and I just recently bought my first pair of 12's. I'm 5'4" and in a 12 I still feel overweight. My problem is that I have very broad shoulders and big boobs. My goal is a size 8, I think when I get down to that I'll actually feel normal.
  • I always thought I would feel average when I got to a size 12, but now that it's approaching, I'm not so sure. When I was a size 24 I liked the idea of being a size 12 because in my mind I could go into any store and stuff would fit and if it was a bit snug there would be an option of trying a size up(unlike now if it doesn't fit @ a size 14 it's too bad I can't wear it)

I will be thrilled to be in a size 12, but because I'm short I don't think I'll feel "normal sized" until I'm much closer to a 10.
  • At 5'9" I've worn 12's and 14's since I was a teenager and I definitely felt overweight. I feel like until I fit into a single digit size (6 or 8) I'll continue to see myself as "too big". JMO
  • I'm 5'5" and in a loose 12, down from a tight 14. Just yesterday, when I was at the mall, I actually felt 'normal'. Not thin, but normal. It was nice.
  • Honestly? yes, I still felt like I looked overweight at that size. But I still feel that way now and I'm in a 10.
  • I feel overweight, but no longer obese most of the time. And I'll probably feel that way even at goal weight--unless I decide ot lower my goal. BUT that's OK because it's so much better than the way I used to feel.

Like Saef, though, in yoga class I'm definitely WAY above average.
  • I still feel overweight in a size 12 (jeans). But I've recently gained 6 pounds and I think that's what I'm feeling. It's interesting that I can really feel 6 measly pounds; before when I was up in the 240 area, I don't think 6 pounds would have even been noticeable on me but down here in the 190 area, I can really feel it.

So yeah. I feel overweight in 12s. But hey--I'm wearing size 12 so wooo hooo! I am back on plan, Day 2. So I think I'll only be feeling overweight for a few weeks.
  • i'm probably an exception - 5'2" and a size 10, but still weigh 165 - so i AM still obese. not sure how that happened! i used to think that saying "i carry a lot of muscle" was just an excuse. it may not be...but i do still feel overweight, and still am.
  • I was a size 12 when I graduated from high school and that's where I would like to be again. I was right at my ideal body weight there, but I am 5'11". The average size for American women is supposedly a 14, so anything under that is most definitely NOT a big size. Only you know where you feel best, though.
  • I think size is a really hard thing to judge by. Two people can have vastly different measurements/height and both wear a 12. They will look vastly different too. That being said, I think 12 is a very average size.
