prozac -- just started a week ago

  • Hi all ... newbie here !!

Been on prozac for a week now -- been having horrible , horrible , headaches and some other issues ... about 3 days out of the week I have had no interest in food and the other 4 days a week I want to eat everything !!
I also have been having bathroom issues , sometimes I feel like I am in a fog , my eyes feel like they want to pop out of my head , and a funny taste in my mouth .

Dr. says prozac shouldn't cause too much of a weight change since it is given to bullemics to help them.

    Any advice ?

    thanks

    Bex
  • I know it sounds hard, but the best advice I can give is stick with it. I got headaches too when I first started on prozac, but after a month or so they were gone and I was already happier. However if you still have problems after a month and feel like you haven't "leveled out," I'd definitely bring up this concern with you Dr.

Oh and definitely drink at least 64 oz of water a day because it's known to give terrible cotton mouth.
  • One of my hobbies is to read all the nutritional info I can. I've read about prozac and it's horrible side effects. L Tryptophan is a natural product that is often used as an alternative. The Pharmaceutical Industry had it pulled of the shelves when Prozac came out so it wouldn't be a competitor. That tells you something about how well L Tryptophan works.
  • i was on prozac MANY years ago, and had a ton of side effects...got to the point where it was causing me to be suicidal so i stopped taking it. although that was more than 10 years ago, and i was only 14 years old. a few years after that is when, i believe, they stopped giving such medications to anyone under the age of 18.

other side effects i had where similar to yours.. some days i didnt eat one single bite of food and some days i ate everything i came across. at 14 though i had a much higher metabolism so the weird eating habbits didn't really have too much of an effect on my weight.
  • Sorry your having a rough time, I loved prozac... better than any one I've tried.

Call your doctor and tell him / her how your feeling.

  • Sorry to hear that! I've been on it for 2 weeks (my first SSRI) and have had zero side effects and it's doing exactly what I'd hoped for but everyone is different. Do you have a follow-up appointment with your doc to review how it's working or not working for you? There are so many others out there!
  • I switched from generic to regular prozac yesterday -- SE much less severe --- small headache now , some dry mouth/metallic taste in mouth , and my eyes aren't feeling like they want to pop out of my head so badly ---
I am crossing my fingers here --
  • I'm glad your symptoms are getting better... Just wanted to add to the above that your side effects should get better with time. If they don't for some reason, don't give up! There are so many antidepressants and everyone has such a unique experience with each one so it's definitely worth trying another one. Also regarding prozac and weight loss, it has generally been shown to be a weight neutral medication and often associated with modest weight loss.
