Sedantary Exercise

  • Does anyone know anything about sedentary exercise? For example, sitting in a car during traffic and squeezing your glutes... is that effective in anyway? I just feel the need to do something while I sit at the computer, in my car, on the train, or whenever else I have to be involuntarily immobile.

    What are your thoughts?
  • It never hurts to move, even if it's just a little! Amazingly, we can burn calories just by fidgeting. Scientists call it NEAT (non-exercise activity thermogenesis) and estimate that it zaps up to additional 300 calories a day. So it pays to take any opportunity to move around and use our muscles.
  • Thanks, but what about burning calories while not moving or fidgeting? What if you're sitting in a chair squeezing your glutes. Does that exercise your muscles and burn calories? What about tightening your abs as you are sitting? What about taking long deep breaths, does that burn extra calories?
  • It takes calories to do that! It takes calories to make a muscle do anything. Clench, tap, wiggle, tense ...

Does anyone know what that's called really? I might have to go google.
  • Isometric?
