So, I've been on yasmin since I was 17, and I just found out that it has been known to cause gallstones and other damage to internal organs. I couldn't believe it! I'm in my early 20s and already have gallstones, and it turns out that's why. So I talked to a lawyer and I'm adding my name to the class actoin lawsuit against them.

Has anyone else been on one of those birth control pills and had gallbladder issues? That could be why. Just type in "yasmin class action" into google or bing to learn more.

Yeah I was on yasmin for a couple years and I have gallstones as well.

Birth control pills have always increased the risk of gallstones. As they say about the classic risk factors for gallstones, “four F's - female, fertile, fat and forty."

Yeah, I took yasmin for 2 years and then starting buying the generic Ocella for the last 2 years, so a total of 4 years I've been on this stuff. I just saw the ad on TV for possibly being apart of the law suit. But I don't know if I have gallstones or not. I do have crazy stomach issues sometimes. But I have never been diagnosed with them. I am going to the doctor on Friday for my yearly examination and I will be sure to ask for something other than yasmin this time!!! It seems like everything is a hazard now-a-days.

"A number of reports have shown that the risk of gallstones is 2.0 to 2.5 times higher in women taking oral contraceptive pills. There are several mechanisms felt to contribute to this increased risk. The use of oral contraceptives increases the concentration and total output of cholesterol in bile. Furthermore, bile acids that make bile more soluble are less available. This is because there is less enterohepatic recycling of bile acids and bile is sequestered in the gallbladder and intestine.. The contractility and rate of emptying of the gallbladder are also markedly reduced. Other studies have shown that pregnant women or women taking oral contraceptive agents often require gallbladder surgery. This suggests that estrogen exposure may accelerate the development of symptoms in patients with pre-existing gallstones. The risk of gallbladder disease may also be related to the duration of oral contraceptive use. The increased incidence of gallstones generally occurs during the first 5 years on oral contraceptive pills and decreases in subsequent years. This supports the theory that women who are predisposed to developing gallstones experience a temporary acceleration of cholesterol gallstone formation with oral contraceptive use. The dose and potency of the oral contraceptive may also increase the risk for gallstone formation as well."

Any birth control pill can increase the risk.

Yikes, I had no idea of the known link between BC pills and gallstones. I can't remember the last woman in my family who HASN'T had their gall bladder removed. I've been free of HBC for a while now, but was starting to consider going back on... there goes that idea. I'll do whatever I can to spend a few extra years with my gall bladder.

Wow, and I was about to ask about getting on birth control pills.. I never liked them b/c of the hormonal effects, but now I'm convinced.. Also, my mom had gall stones (she was never on birth control) - so that would put me at an even higher risk. Horrible stuff. Gall stones are extremely painful from what I hear.
