Your favorite desserts....

  • My dairy intolerance has been kicking up like crazy lately and the doctor suggested I give up anything dairy based again. Traces don't bother me like anything found in bread, or the lactose found in non-dairy creamers. However things like ice cream, yogurt and most milk based products are messing with my body to horrible degrees.

    Heres the thing I love having dessert every night, its usually light Ice cream or an Ice cream bar. I need to get away from those types of things being what I see as dessert.

    I also have to avoid soy as much as possible. Trace amounts is fine, but soy based products is a no go as well.

    What are some of your favorite sweet treats that aren't milk and soy based? I need a new though process on dessert.
  • sugar free jello, fat free hot chocolate. You can also try sorbet, they are low calorie too!
  • One cake mix
    One can diet soda.

    Mix, bake as it says on the box (sometimes you need to cook it for just a little longer). It's super yummy.

    And if you aren't bothered by yogurt baked in stuff, the no pudge chocolate cake is delish. You add nonfat vanilla yogurt to the mix. That might be too much for you, though.

    Another thing I like to do is slice up apples into a ramekin (sp?) and mix together oats, smart balance, and brown sugar as a topping. Sometimes I bake it, sometimes I microwave it.

  • I absolutely love Purely Decadent ice cream. They are very creamy despite being dairy free. Some flavors are made with coconut milk. Check it out . Also, we made zucchini cake some time ago and I cut them into small pieces and froze them. I have a terrible sweet tooth. So, if I want dessert I usually plan for it.
  • If you can control the portion, Temptations hemp milk ice cream is really good. Again, it is definitely a treat.

    For me, I prefer a couple squares of ritter sport dark chocolate.

    I used to eat the Purely Decadent stuff when I could have soy, unfortunately our grocery stores don't carry any of the non-soy stuff, but I think I will talk to the managers about that.

    Hows dark chocolate? There can't be that much dairy in it... I keep meaning to make my own chocolate mousse with cream of tartar (a starchy powder) and whipped eggwhites.

    Dairy free cheese (goat - yum!) with jams on crackers.

    Granola with cinammon and splenda. When I have a *REAL* sweet craving, i make a ton o' splenda cinammon popcorn and pig out. That's a once a month thing.

    I've been enjoying almond milk a lot lately
  • Dark chocolate is usually fine, as long as its dark enough, which I love. I LOVE chocolate mousse. So I think I will find a way to make it.

    Once we can milk our goats (DH needs to build a stanchion before next breeding season). I plan on making yogurt and perhaps cheese out of it.
  • Frozen bananas! You can buy them coated with chocolate. Or you can just make your own. Slice a banana, put the slices in a single layer on a cookie sheet (or something similar, I usually use the lid to one of my tupperware containers), and then freeze them. Once the slices are frozen, you can put them into a freezer bag or container.

    Frozen waffles with PB or jelly. Eggo also makes some frozen baked goods that I think would work as dessert. I've been meaning to try them myself. Most of them are around 150 calories per serving.

    I sometimes eat cereal (hot or cold) as a dessert. Chocolate Chex or oatmeal, for example.

    What about the Vitalicious muffins, brownies, or muffin tops? They sell them at my Safeway now, maybe you could get your grocery store to carry them. I also used to order from Penny's Low Fat Desserts and their products were always really good.

    So Delicious makes a dairy-free, soy-free yogurt. You could make fruit and yogurt parfaits with it.

    There's also the new Arctic Zero ice cream. Other than whey protein, it doesn't see to have any dairy. Not sure about soy, but it doesn't seem like it would have much if it has any. You can order it from Amazon.com with free shipping (although, even with free shipping, it's kind of pricey).
  • Edy's Real fruit bars are really good (they're popsicles), and I don't think they have any dairy or soy. They come in many, many different flavors.
  • Oh yeah, I have discovered real fruit bars. They don't seem to bother me so I dont think they have anything bad in them, they are a bit sweet but still yum.

    DH has also turned me on to eating frozen fruits slightly thawed. Its yummy.

  • I have been on a crumbles w/ all the fruit in season. I have tried:

    Peach
    Apple
    Raspberry

    I love the coke cake and how you can modify the flavor of the soda and cake. You could try a goats milk yogurt w/ No Pudge (my mother grew up on Goat's milk and prefers it to regular even w/ no allergies to milk!)
  • lemon or raspberry sorbet is AWESOME.
  • I bought one of those new style ice cream freezers for my birthday last year. They make a smaller amount than the old-fashioned kind and don't require cranking or rock salt.

    The thing I make most in it is sorbet -- 2 cups of pureed fruit, 1/4 cup of something sweet, 1/4 of egg whites. The last two are optional but the egg whites improve the texture and, for me, some honey or agave nectar makes it more dessert-like. I don't do artificial sweeteners but I'm sure they would work.

    Then, when you do have your goat's milk, you could use the freezer for making ice creams and frozen yogurts.

    I can't post the link, but if you go to the site, and type in 1-ingredient ice cream, you should be able to find it.

    Basically, you take a frozen banana (I freeze my yucky brown ones), throw it in the food processor for about 5 minutes (yeah, it's a long time), and you get ice cream at the end. It tastes a little banana-y, but that's what a little bit of cocoa powder or chocolate syrup is for.
