Campfire Cooking (foil pouches)

  • I'm taking a solo camping trip next week (for 5 days) and I'm planning my meals. For dinner I'll be making a campfire to heat my precooked meat and I'll be doing veggies in foil pouches in the fire. For dinner one of the days I want to use cut up sweet potato with a little olive oil and spices in a foil pouch. My question is how long do you think it would take to cook in a campfire in a foil pouch? Or do you think I could skewer the chunks and cook them like a shishkabob or are they too hard? Should I try to precook them and then just reheat with the fire?
  • I typically will microwave a baked potato for a few minutes before wrapping it in foil and cooking it on a campfire. I imagine sweet potatoes are similar in density and would also take a while to cook.

The issue with the raw sweet potatoes on the skewer is that the other food would probably turn to mush by the time the sweet potatoes were done, unless the sweet potatoes were already partially baked.

I've always stuck the whole potato wrapped in foil directly into the coals to cook it.
