milk shakes that are good for you!

  • ok, so I came across this discovery. It's called an avocado milk shake. You put some variation of the following things in it:

    avocado
milk (I used almond milk, no sugar)
    vanilla
    cinnamon
    (I also added splenda)
    ICE

I also added coconut oil. My Dr said to eat lots of avocado and coconut oil, because they are good fat and will help make up the calorie deficit when eliminating carbs. BUT, it also occurred to me that the avocado didn't really do much flavor wise but did add creaminess (and lots of vitamins and fiber). So one might be so inclined to make a variation like this:

    coconut oil
    almond milk
    ice
    vanilla
    designer whey chocolate shake mix?
maybe also add some dark chocolate chips? Lindt Excellence 85% cocoa has 5 net carbs in about half a bar. smash it up and put some in.

The more ice you add the thicker the shake will be. My first shake was more like ice cream and I put 1 whole tray of ice cubes in.

Lemme know if you make this and how you change it up! I LOVED it.
  • That sounds good! In the summer I always make "good for you milk shakes" mine include.
1 cup frozen fruit (usually blueberries) but anything works! 79 cals
1 cup soy light vanilla soy milk 60 cals
and one container of oikos plain fat free greek yogurt!! 80 cals
blend it all up and it is so creamy so yummy and filling!!! plus they are full of calcium, fiber and protein!!!!!
  • that sounds good, however the sugar count on that is pretty high. :-/
  • Why is the sugar count high? Nobody is including any added sugars, just any natural sugar in fruits or dairy (well, except for the mention of chocolate ).
  • 1 cup of vanilla soy milk has 9 net carbs, 1 cup of blueberries has about 17 net carbs, yogurt has about 19 net carbs per 8 oz. that's 45 net carbs, most of which is sugar. the chocolate i mentioned is 3 net carbs if using the designer whey shake mix, and 5 net carbs if using the chocolate i mentioned. There is 1 gram of sugar in the almond milk, and probably 1 gram in the vanilla. that's it.
  • I love bluberries and greek yogurt so I will totally try that one! Yum! It fits my plan well.
  • I guess. I didn't know we were trying to do low carb here. Apart from maybe added sugar in certain milks/yogurts (which is a type I don't use), I do not fret the natural sugars.
  • I've been making smoothies every morning and add plenty of strawberries. I'd say strawberries, blueberries, etc have good health benefits. I don't fret about natural sugars too much either.
  • milk shakes in the summer are yummy in my tummy..

im lucky that the protien shakes that i take, allow me to have them everyday..
    protien powder
    choclate/vanilla light soy milk
    ice

very yummy..protien, low sugar, and the best milk shake i have ever had

    summer is here!!
  • yeah, those natural sugars are a problem for me. My dr said even things like apples have to be avoided. It does suck because I too love blueberries and yogurt.
  • What do you have that the doctor said avoid apples? If I'm not mistaken, even diabetics can have (some) natural sugars. I have PCOS myself which means I seek out a stable blood sugar level and apples are on the good side of the spectrum for that.

Fruits have a lot of good antioxidants and polyphenols which really can't be duplicated which is one reason I am a big fan of fruit.
  • insulin resistance. she says about 4 carbs a meal is ok. sugary and starchy fruits and vegetables are off the list, but green things with lots of fiber are ok. It seemed insane to me, but honestly I've lost a lot of weight listening to her, so I believe it, for now.
  • So you eat about 12 carbs/day and this is long term (beyond 2 weeks)? I'd be a little skeptical but it your doctor and your plan. I wouldn't be skeptical of weight loss because that sounds like it is probably a pretty low calorie diet.
  • 20 is the max, smaller meals throughout the day. and yeah i told her I was having a hard time making 1000 calories a day and that's when she suggested avocados and coconut oil. Good fats to fill in the calorie deficit.
