Sweat and Salt

  • Okay, I hope this doesn't sound weird. I have noticed that after I workout (cardio mainly) that I can feel this sort of fine grainy texture on my face...mainly on my forehead. Anyway, it has this salt taste to it. Does anyone know what this is about? Should I be worried or is this normal? Am I taking in too much salt in my diet?

    Thanks!!!
  • Sweat is basically salty fluid and if it dries, the salt is left.
  • So is this a good thing...or just normal???
  • Also, do I need to replace any of this salt or is it not really that big of a deal?
  • well if you sweat a lot, then it is smart to replace with electrolytes which includes salt. A multivitamin can help. I drink an electrolyte drink sometimes.

    It is completely normal.
  • I've had this happen when I worked out particularly intensely. I don't have it happen consistently, though, so I don't know WHY it occurs...haven't been able to pinpoint it.

That being said, we normally don't have to worry about replacing salt when we exercise unless we're endurance athletes or in heavy training. The sodium in your diet (assuming you're not going low-sodium) is probably enough.
  • This doesn't happen to me all the time. Just when I work out for a long period of time. I don't sweat heavily either. I just thought it was sort of weird! LOL! But I guess it's normal. I have been researching this online and reading a lot about people who cycle that sweat a lot of salt...leaving stains on their workout clothes. My case is not so intense.
  • It's not weird but very normal .... Most of my face feels gritty with salt after a workout...
  • DH's bike helmet could be confused as a salt factory. I had never seen anything like it, but it is very normal
  • It happens to me too. I love it. Makes me feel so accomplished
  • This used to happen to me all the time but not anymore but as everyone has said it is completely normal.
  • On the same subject but yuckier:

I have never had any sort of an odor before--other than a good one. Now, after my workout every morning I notice the underarms in my shirts are yuck!
