Frustrated.... please help!

  • I've officially started taking weight loss seriously about 5 weeks ago.
    I'm eating one serving of bread a day, two protein servings, 2 dairy, 1 healthy fat, and a minimum of 5 fruits of veggies a day. I exercise about 3 times a week. I haven't lost a pound. My boyfriend is doing the same thing. He's lost 25 pounds in 5 weeks (dr. supervised - he just going diagnosed with diabetes).
    What am I doing wrong? Is there a healthy way to jump start my weight loss? And recommendations?

  • I would maybe try exercising a little more if at all possible, and see where that takes you.

  • Well, I think yuo should keep track of your calories or maybe get with a plan. WW is basically calorie counting and it's really easy. Sounds like you are off to a great start.

    I eat between 1200-1300 calories a day; all healthy, natural foods. Nothing processed or anything.
    I'm just so frustrated. The weight is literally falling of my bf and I can't loose a pound! For nearly a month I bounce between 201 and 204. Every single morning he's dropped a pound!
  • First, men always lose at a faster rate than women, maddening but true. Don't compare your boyfriends loss with yours. Are you logging your actual calories or estimating? You might be consuming more calories than you think.What about portion sizes? Do you have a plan for yourself or are you copying your boyfriends ? These are just some points to think about.

  • It is easy to underestimate portions, so would suggest you measure precise amounts for a while if you are not already doing that. Would be very unusual (and maddening) to lose nothing for this many weeks on 1200-1300 cals a day even without exercise.

    But your expectations of losing need to be realistic too. One to two pounds a week is still a lot. A pound a day is not realistic.

    Give yourself some big credits for your efforts. It will happen if you stick with it.
  • I do have my own plan. He's on some meal replacement shake thing that's supposed to help his blood sugar. I'm pretty much going back my old LA Weight loss days because it worked for me in the past. I do need a journal though. I know my portion sizes and weights are right, but I should be logging it to be sure.
    I know one of the differences is that he use to pig out and I've always been more moderate. So him losing lots of weight makes sence not that he's being healthy, and I'm really only consuming 300-400 less calories a day. So... maybe thats why my loss is so sluggish....? Not sure.
    For the next couple weeks I'll start logging and working out more. Maybe that will do the trick.
    Would eating just protein, fruits, and veggies for a few days help jump start me? Or should I just stay slow and steady?
  • raw, have you seen a doctor? If you're sure you're only eating 1200-1300 calories per day and exercising as well, there may be another reason why you're not losing.
  • I've yo-yoed all my life... I once lost 30lbs in 3 months (stupidly, by not eating as a teen). My last serious attempt was 2 years ago where I lost 40lbs in about 8 months. I know I CAN loose, it's just not happening this time. I dont know much about health; do you think it's possible for my body change that much in two years to where it's harder to loose?
  • I don't know, raw... there are a lot of factors. I've noticed that I don't lose as quickly as I once did now that I'm older. And I know others who can't lose due to insulin resistance. Maybe you're suffering from calorie creep and don't realize it.
  • I'd like to know how much you weigh, how tall you are and how old you are ... if you don't mind

    And ... is your biggest concern your own slow start -or- how you compare to your BF?
  • 23, 5'8, 200lbs. I'd put it on my profile but I haven't figured that part out yet.
    Haha... no, I'm really more concerned about myself. I'm happy for him, he needs it more than me. But it is frustrating.

    Tell us what you ate yesterday including amounts as close as you can figure.
  • Calorie creep comes when you don't measure things. For example, I hate to measure so I often eye measurements. Well, when something like peanut butter is almost 100 calories per tablespoon and you think your eyed measurement is only 2 tablespoons but in fact turns out to be more like 4, you've doubled the amount of calories you've consumed from 200 to 400. Ugh! So I have to be careful with measurements or my calories creep up on me. Make sense?
