diet soda

  • Hi everyone. I started SB last Thursday with my BoyF. I have really enjoyed some of the recipes and am excited about this forum!!! I just want to make sure I understand that only caffinated diet drinks are limited, right? I know diet soda is not the healthiest, but it can get me through sometimes....is there a limit on non caffeine diet soda? I have the books and i don't see real clear specifications.....I am thinking there is not a limit? Thanks!
  • I'm not sure if there is a limit...I'm sure one of the vets can answer that.

Make sure you aren't substituting soda for water though, as soda will leach nutrients from your body and curb your weightloss.
  • i would limit diet soda as much as possible to 1-3 per day

i drink a lot of ice tea or crystal light

    i rarely drink diet soda

it has a lot of sodium in it....
  • Thanks, it does have a lot of sodium as I have noticed some of the other stuff I am eating as well, namely lunchmeat for snack rolls! but it is hard to cut everything out at one time. I hardly ever have more than 3 a day (sometimes not even that) so I guess I am doing ok!
  • An alternative: Carbonated water, often called sparkling mineral water, club soda or seltzer water (not tonic water, as this often contains sugar and ALWAYS contains quinine).

Fill a glass with carbonated water. Add splenda/stevia to taste. Add some lime and/or lemon juice to taste.

Voila! You have your own diet sprite alternative.

Please note that not all carbonated waters are equivalent.

    * 115mg sodium (Canada Dry 12 oz. can)
    * 0mg sodium (Perrier 10 oz. bottle)

If you want to get even better, you can make your own carbonated water. Here's how. Also, there's no sodium in the stuff you make at home.

PS: I'm not sure if Diet Coke made with Splenda comes in decaf yet, but just for info, it only has 35mg sodium per 12 oz. can.
  • snapless - beyond the sugar in tonic water....who could stomach that! AcK!!!

Good info on making your own seltzer water, we go through that like crazy around here.
  • i love sparkling water. Juice from a few lemons and slenda is good too....almost like lemonde! thx all!
  • I like to have a glass of soda every couple of days, when I do I try to make it Diet Rite. It is caffeine free and sodium free.
  • Thanks Snapless
I immediately went to that website you referenced. I love it when I find out a way to get that fizz without all the rest of that stuff. I have been drinking diet soda since 1970. I would like to say that I limit it to 1-3 per day but that is one area where I really have had a hard time cutting back.

My solution has been to make the traditional Southern sweet tea with Splenda. I buy soda once a week and once that is gone then I revert to my "sweet" tea. It would fool even the deepest of the deep Southerns, I am sure.

I have been using those drink sticks lately. I love them! Someone else on here mentioned them a couple of weeks ago so I was game. It really helps to add to your bottled water, purchased or your own, when you would like a change. I too also make homemade lemonade with Splenda. Even my DH loves that!

I'm not entirely soda-free but I do exercise other options.
