Frozen veggies, as good as fresh?

  • I was at the supermarket today and was buying a lot of vegetables, unfortunately being a Sun night the produce section didn't have much of a selection left.

I ended up buying what I could for fresh vegetables, but ended up buying some bags of frozen veggies also. Birdseye has a wide selection of mixes, I've been buying these b/c they're very convenient for stir frys, pastas and such. To me, they're easy, there's no prep work (washing, cutting, etc), they offer variety, and sometimes they're cheaper than fresh veggies.

I had read a while ago somewhere that frozen are as good as fresh and in some instances better, since they tend to retain more of the vitamins as they are frozen at their peak.

Personally the texture of fresh veggies can't be beat, but when in a hurry frozen can be such a convenient substitution. What do you think? Are they just as good? Which is your favorite brand? How about your favorite mix? How do you use them?
  • I love frozen bags of vegetables. I use them pretty much once a day. Usually frozen steambags, because I can just pop them in the microwave and there they are! I eat a lot of broccoli. Also, a bunch that come with carrots, broccoli, & snow peas (I think...). Anyway, I think they're delicious. Nothing is as good as fresh, personally. But the frozen bags are a close second, and you can't beat their convenience!
  • It's been shown that often frozen are more nutritious than a lot of the "fresh" vegetables in stores, due to being flash frozen shortly after being harvested, versus transport time and sitting in the stores, often under less than ideal conditions for long periods of time for "fresh".
  • I eat a lot of frozen veggies. The organic green beans that Costco sells are awesome. Trader Joe's also has some good frozen veggies. Fresh does tend to taste better but for convenience, I like frozen.
  • Frozen vegetables are great! But some tend to get mushy when thawed out, like bell peppers, for example. So if that bothers you, then for that I'd get fresh. But things like broccoli, green beans, carrots, etc. that are more sturdy are great! And like others said they often are more nutritious than fresh! One of my favorite frozen veggies is kale, because for me, it's a pain to get it *just right* whenever I'm cooking it myself. But, since it's packaged chopped into small pieces and the freezing process makes it wilt, all I do is heat it up and it's perfect! I wouldn't eat kale if it wasn't for the frozen... haha.

There's no frozen kale at any store here. I wish there were!
  • SoulBliss, that's a shame! I guess there aren't any Giant grocery stores over there... Here we have frozen spinach, turnip greens, collard greens, and kale! So that pretty much covers my bases...

This is very true because the longer the veggies sit, the more nutrients they lose.

Frozen veggies generally contain more nutrients than fresh, unless you know that the fresh veggies you're buying are just off the vine. Which is highly unlikely.

You can ask and see if they can order some in for you. You may not have realized it was available to request before.
  • I didn't know kale came frozen. I haven't really looked for it, but now I'm going to. I'd definitely buy it if I can find it!
