Surprise pregnancy... weight loss on hold AGAIN!

  • Hey you guys - I haven't been on here in a few months. I found out in July that I am pregnant with our 3rd child. Our son was just born in February and this was definitely a surprise for us! It made sense though... I was super-duper tired all the time, and my milk started drying up (despite pumping every 2 hours around the clock and taking fenugreek til I stunk like IHOP), so at least there was a cause!

I am bummed because I was still 6lbs from my prepregnancy #2 weight, which was still 32lbs above my prepregnancy #1 weight!

So far I have only gained 2lbs (I am 21 weeks, due end of March) above what I weighed at 4 weeks which is great. I am honestly too busy with a three year old and nine month old to overeat.

Just wondering if anyone else has found themselves in a surprise pregnancy? We just found out it is a girl, we are very happy, and so far I and the baby are perfectly healthy. I feel some guilt because in a lot of ways I am not very excited about this... we wanted another child but weren't planning on having them 13 months apart!
  • Congrats on the pregnancy! My sisters first two are 12 months apart (8 and 7) Her youngest two are 14 months apart (18 mo and 4 mo). She handles it great! Good luck to you and your family!!!
  • Major surprise baby #3 for us too, although ours will be three years apart. We were just going to have the two, and I got rid of all our baby stuff. Luckily, we know now we don't really need a lot of that stuff anyway.

Good job on only gaining 2 pounds! wow! I've already gained nearly 30.
  • Congrats! Esther was a heckuva surprise, though she was born closer to 20 months after Linda.

I think number three tends to be a sneaky one. I know more than a few people who were surprised with a third.
  • I agree that the third tends to be a surprise. Mine sure was!!!

I was "done". We had a girl (now 8) and a boy (now 5). I had one of each, had gotten rid of all of our baby things-and was very busy performing and teaching-and enjoying my "free weekends" when the children would go stay with a grandma-which they loved-and enjoying my full night's sleep each night.

My pregnany with Saber (found out I was pg for sure on Christmas 2005-but suspected immediately after conception) was horrible timing. No baby items. We were in the process of relocating-DH was already out of town at the new job, and I was staying with the kids and trying to sell the house. BIG mess. DH was only home a couple weekends a month. We were using birth control.

I ended up going through my first trimester alone-except on weekends-because of the relocation. It was horrible. So-we ended up selling a house, buying a new house, changing Jasmine to a new school, MOVING, having to leave the performing company I was with and start teaching in a new city-and then having a baby a month early-and school starting 2 days after I got released from the hospital-with our 5 year old starting kindergarten and having to make that adjustment. What a YEAR.

I will say this-it is a good thing there is hair color, because my grays have doubled this year.
  • sheesh what a year aphil!

we found out at the end of july for sure. my husband was working from home, which was cool, but meant we had to buy our own health insurance, so that meant no maternity coverage. fine since we were not TTC you know... but then a few weeks later he got a job offer at a university so, a month later, we moved, and here we are! it's been a big change and hard with feeling sick/tired all the time and getting the kids adjusted to the move, but the insurance is great and it's a really cool town (you could totally forget you're in the middle of indiana ).

i am starting to get concerned about being able to breastfeed with 2 other little ones - the smallest being 13 months and very much a mommy's baby when he gets tired or doesn't feel good. we'll just see how it goes i guess. i've done both breast and bottle with both kids and feel fine with it either way but hopefully will be able to breastfeed this one for at least the first half of a year. that was my goal with truman, but we only made it 5 1/2 months (major supplementing that last 1/2 month as i tried to figure out where my milk had gone!).
  • Welcome back Heather! I have had to put my weight loss on hold again too! My kids will be 17 months apart. We were trying, but didn't expect it to happen so quickly (found out I was pg 3 weeks after starting to try!) So here we are. I know many folks that were surprised with a third (or even fourth) baby! Congratulations to you!
  • Congratulations!!!

all of mine were surprises. I have to say that BF was extremely difficult in the beginning with a 2 1/2 YO, a 3 1/2 YO and 11 YO but it has gotten so much easier now that he only nurses for about 30 minutes every 3 hours or so. In the beginning I was pumping and feeding him because I could pump for 5-10 minutes and then feed him and it would take less time than to just nurse him.
  • Congratulations on the pregnancy! That is a huge surprise, but how exciting. Just think of how close they will be and how much they will be able to do together. Fun!!! I desperately want to have a 'surprise' but I guess my birth control is working...and the fact my husband now works out of town during the week. A lot less time to make a surprise.

Anyway, I just wanted to say congrats on breastfeeding and there are many sites out there where you can find support as well as in your community. I've been breastfeeding my daughter for 17 months now and know many people who are tandem nursing. If you would like any information on these things, contact your La Leche League or go somewhere like mothering.com or LLL's website. I'm always here, too. Good luck and I'm sure you will do great!
  • I am almost at the end of my surprise pregnancy! I was really just getting in the grove of eating healthy and exercising regularly when I found out I was pregnant...then I had morning sickness and I guess I used it as an excuse to be lazy! Now I am at the last stretch and wish I would have kept my good habits! What a blessing it is, but I know the concern when it puts your weight loss on hold.
