Soy: bad or good??

  • Hey Everyone:

I know there are many reports of how soy can either be a friend or an enemy. But I'm trying to get in a nutshell. I love soymilk (esp. Silk Chocolate) and edamame but I'm getting nervous about consuming them now.

Should I lay of this legume?

    Anyone have any input??

    Thanks in advance!

  • unfermented soy (tempeh, miso, natto) is probably ok in moderation, but I'd avoid all the other stuff. It can depress thyroid function and some recent studies indicate that it may "drive" estrogenic cancers.

    Thanks for the great article!

I was just wondering about this myself as I consider going back to being a vegetarian... (was for 5 years 1996-2000). I used to eat A LOT of what this article describes as "fake foods": Boca Burgers, soy breaded "chicken" patties, soy breakfast sausage, Silk soy milk. It appears they are not the blessed miracle foods I thought they were
  • I love soy milk because I can't have calcium (the original Westsoy only has 4% per cup compared with 30% for milk). That's about the only soy food I use but I especially like that it has 4gm fiber per cup and 9gm protein.
