My (unorthodox) strategy to lose weight over X-mas

  • My plan to continue to lose weight over the holidays is a little different. I used to always gain weight because of all the holiday candy and stuff. I ate so much candy it was practically obscene. How do I keep from eating it now? I make it!

While I was in college I couldn't afford to buy a lot of expensive gifts for X-mas so I decided to make candy for everyone. Each year I spend around $100 and have enough candy for work, the family, the inlaws, and my husband. Last year I made 20 lbs of caramel, 35 lbs of fudge, 10 lbs peanut butter fudge, 200 truffles, pepperment bark, toffee, and peanut brittle. All of the fudge and caramel is wrapped in bite sized pieces. I tell my husband if he wants to eat any he has to help me wrap it.

You would think with all this candy sitting around I would gain weight. The thing is, I hardly eat any of it. After wrapping 600+ pieces of candy I am sooo sick of it I just don't want it at all. Plus I'm so busy cooking and wrapping I don't have time to snack on junk. When I started making candy I never realized how huge a production it would become. Or that I would actually lose weight doing it. Maybe I should start making pumkin pie too. Hehe

  • Wow! I think I would be way way way to tempted. I love all of the candies and deserts at christmas time.

Your post does have me thinking: what will I do to lose? I normally have 2 thanksgivings, 2 christmas dinners, and 1 new years dinner (all the fixins') And 1 christmas party. Portion control for the thanksgiving/christmas and new years (normally I don't over eat on these days because I spend half the day either cooking or being ignored by my in-laws) Plus I feed the kids which puts my attention on them rather than food. My christmas party? I will probably gain 3 pounds from the alcohol alone This is one day I cant watch what I eat or drink. 7 of my best friends with an all expense paid trip to our favorite restraunt/lounge!!! Its the one time a year I get to be without my kids and husband!!!
  • That sounds like a very good idea!!!
  • I feel the same way when I bake. When all I smell is cookies or cake for a few hours, I can't stand tasting it. Crazy, but true!
  • KristiS - will you share your recipes? If you think that's not good for a diet site, you can PM me & I'll give you my e-mail to send them to me direct. Thanks!
  • I would think that with all of that I would want to eat it!!!

But then again when I think about it, I don't want to eat supper right after I cook it. It takes me a little bit.
  • Wow, more power to you!! I couldn't do it, but I'm glad it works for you.
  • I wish this worked for halloween candy! Good lucK!
  • Su-Bee I'd be happy to share some recipes. Which ones would you like?

  • Peppermint bark & PB fudge, for sure! And is the toffee like taffy, or is it more like the hard toffee in the middle of a Skor bar? If it's the hard stuff, I'd love that recipe, too!
  • Hi Kristi - I understand this completely! I've found in the past that one way to get rid of a sweet craving is to read recipes. When I see all the sugar and junk that goes into them, I lose my desire to eat it. Sounds like a good tactic to me!
  • lol this reminds me of my brownie sundae obsession. I was about 23 the first time i had a brownie sundae and I became obsessed. If a BS was on the menu I had..to...have...it. A few years later I decided to make the ultimate brownie sundae. Homemade hazelnut fudge brownies. Real vanilla bean ice cream. Homemade fresh whipped cream. Real hot fudge. It was awesome for about 3 bites...and then it just became too much, too rich or something. I havent had a brownie sundae since and they dont appeal at all....its been10 years.

now if only i could do that with other foods.
