Need Help Re: At-Home Hair Dye

  • So, I've always said that going gray wouldn't bother me. But, I think the fact that I'm starting to notice more and more gray hairs everyday, coupled with my empending 30th birthday, has made me vain.

What's a good at-home dye that will cover my gray and give me a somewhat natural color?

    Any help is appreciated!

    Thanks!

  • Hey Tisha

I use Natural Match currently. I used the light blonde neutral colour (9N I think.)
I find because my colour is so light it didn't cover my greys to fantastically, but the colour itself is really nice and natural.
The next time I use it, I'll use the meduim blond (neutral also), and I think it will cover my greys better.

Not much help, but hopefully someone else will have more professional advice for you.

    Good luck, and happy hunting!

What do you mean by "neutral"? I've been trying to find a lighter color because I'm approaching older than dirt while still young enough to not want all gray.
  • There are hair colors designed for women with graying hair. Lorel Preferance is one, I think. On the back or sides of any box of hair dye it has info on how well the dye will cover gray. Some dyes should not be used on gray hair, whil others are designed for it.

Also look for a hair dye with "natural highlights" so it will look more natural.
  • I use Natural Match too and I love it!
  • I use Natural Match also. After years of using various colors and brands on the market I tried this one and fell in love. It is the only one I've found that actually matches my natural color and doesn't look fake. As a matter of fact it's been quite awhile between dye jobs and you can't even see any roots because it matches so well. I have medium brown hair and use 5C.

With Natural Match, it comes in all your normal shades, light, medium and dark in blonde's, browns and reds I believe. Each of those has a cool shade, a neutral shade and a warm shade. The cools take out brassiness/yellowness, the neutrals are the most natural colours, and the warms add a golden tone.
So, if your hair is ashy like mine and you want to warm it up you can get a good match with the neutral, or warm it up even more with the warm version.
It works well because you always get a colour close to your own, but it can also fix the ashy-ness or brassiness problems It's like an improved version of your own colour. I agree about the roots too, they're less obvious because the colour is close to your own.

    PHEWww...long winded aren't I?

I'll put the link in, and hope it doesn't get removed

It has a cool colour selector too...for if you're not sure what to pick!

  • Girl, I am telling you as a friend....... don't do it! I was a faithful color at home gal and got along fine, til my hair turned green! Not even a lovely shade of green, but a nasty, muddy, ugly green. I had always used the same brand, and then one day they were out, so I changed. HUGE mistake. Now, I go every 5 weeks to the salon, and it is totally worth it. Maybe I have to give something else up sometimes, but I've never had a problem. Also, my husband died unexpectantly a while back, and about 2 weeks after the funeral I woke up and my normally med brown hair was white! The dr. said delayed shock, and now I can't seem to get much darker than golden blonde. It's a good color, and I'm ok with it. good luck with whatever you choose, though!
