Ideas on Snacking!!!

    I am currently in week 3 of the Fat Smash diet and I am running out of creative ideas for snacking. I am getting a little tired of yogurt . What are you guys snacking on during the day?

    Even though this is day 1 for me, I was wondering about the snacks too. Are they different from the other meals because of portion size or that it is simply a snack and does not include the beans, rice, or oatmeal?
  • The way I see it is that you eat 5 mini-meals during the day. So they don't actually call them snacks. I've mainly been eating yogurt and fruit but any of the allowable foods could be a snack.

    How about raw veggies and salsa (or a drizzle of ff dressing).

    I made a pumpkin smoothie/milkshake the other day using a small carton of yogurt, skim milk & some canned pumpkin (not pie mix). I also put in pumpkin pie spice and a recipe called for a banana but I didn't use that. I didn't feel it needed any additional sweetening.

    I also made a quick brown rice "pudding" by adding in a little skim milk & cinnamon. Again, I didn't need any extra sweetener.

    There's a recipe for oatmeal cookies but if you're making them you shouldn't have your oatmeal that morning (or make sure you only have your allowed daily amount).

    The sweet potato fries would be a good snack, too.

    Also, it hasn't been mentioned that I can see, but Stevia is a natural sweetener that does not cause blood sugar spikes and if I ever need extra sweetening I'll be using that. I prefer the liquid version.

    Even though candy is my downfall, I've learned to eat anything else without sweeteners (such as coffee, tea, unsweetened cereal, oatmeal, etc.). So unless it is candy, I almost can't stand overly sweet foods anymore. Weird!
  • Let's see...for snacks I like seedless grapes, apples (raw or cooked in the microwave with a little cinnamon and a pack of stevia), raw veggie slices, smoothies (yogurt, milk, frozen fruit), a small garden salad, yogurt and a banana, oatmeal cookies or 2 oatmeal pancakes w/fruit on top (recipes in the recipe thread), hard boiled egg whites, roasted garbanzo beans. There isn't really any particular meal you have to eat your allowable foods. If it's on the list you can eat it any meal or "snack" time. That's all I can think of off the top of my head but hopefully that helps.
    As far as portion sizes I eat a little less at snack time but not much. I pretty much keep my portions the same all through the day since I'm eating so often I don't eat alot at any particular meal because I'm just not that hungry.
    And Judy I love my stevia! I have both powdered and liquid. It doesn't give me the headaches or cause me to have cravings like the others seem to do.

    carrots, sugar snap peas, celery whatever veggies and some Fat Free dressing as dip!

    the oatmeal cookies with some milk!

    cottage cheese

    apples, pears, you name it!

    frozen berries (thawed -- no sugar added) in my yogurt

    turkey pepperoni (17 slices in a serving!)

    and of course, lots of water!
  • Wow, how can we NOT be successful with all these yummy ideas. I think I'll do ok on this since I do prefer veggies and fruits over meats. plus I adore whole oatmeal anyways. I did make the oatmeal cookies just now. Wow, they are tasty!

    I'm just wondering how I'm going to function tomorrow at work without reading this forum? I called in today because of a really bad TOM. But it was a good thing since I just stated the Detox today, and now I'm more knowledgable.
  • I'm a big fan of seedless grapes, or berries of any sort that I can eat at my desk without getting my keyboard sticky. Also, I found some organic brown rice rice cakes with just a leetle sea salt that satisfy my "crunch" cravings.

    A new snack for me is I made some yogurt "cheese" (drained some lowfat plain yogurt over cheesecloth overnight) and spread that on a celery stick - it has a consistency close to cream cheese and the effect is the same. I felt almost guilty eating it!

    We love stevia at our house, too - I'd never heard of the stuff, but DH used to work for a vitamin research company and he introduced me to it. Amazing what a tiny amount will give such a sweet taste!

  • I like using stevia because it's a natural product (I know, "natural" doesn't always mean "better"), and I'm just a little leery about splenda; I don't know why, exactly. Maybe because it's an articifical sweetener? I use stevia mostly for flavoring (tea, oatmeal, etc.) and have never used it in baking (although after looking it up I see that you can, with some adjustments). There are websites out these that go into more detail, of course. What I have to keep in mind when I use it though (and we have the powdered version), is that it's super sweet and a little goes a long way!
  • I personally like it better. The reason I don't like splenda (aside from the fact that it causes me to have cravings and headaches) is that it is made with chlorine and has a slight aftertaste. I don't get an aftertaste with stevia or any side effects and it's a more natural substance.
  • Lots of raw veggies. I never really liked them, but my tastes are changing and I feel very satisfied with the veggies, if Im in a mood for them cooked I just steam some up in the microwave and add some Mrs. Dash and Lemon juice and Im usually good for awhile. Those Sweet potato fries are awesome...I have to be carefull with those..MMMM.
  • splenda is artificial? I thought it was a natural sweetener because it's derived from sugar...hmmmm

  • Mornin' Jenn - you're right, splenda is derived from sugar. I guess it's the processing that weirds me out. My understanding is that three hydrogen-oxygen groups on the sugar molecule are substituted with three chlorine atoms. That way sucralose can't be metabolized by the body, hence digested. I don't know that there's anything wrong with splenda, and I'd never tell anyone not to use it, but I just prefer to use the real stuff (sugar), and if that's not possible, as in this case, I'll go with the stevia. It might be the 5 years with the vitamin research guru DH talking, too!
