Fat Smash and Nursing Mothers?

  • Hi all! I'm so excited to start this diet tomorrow. Have any of you tried this diet as a nursing mother? Being that breastfeeding makes you so hungry I'm wondering if its a doable thing, is it enough food/protein, etc? I am the mommy of an 8 month old baby who only nurses no bottles or real food yet. Please advise. Thanks!!
  • Oooh, good question! I would suggest writing down some sample menus and showing your doctor. You might need to supplement the diet with more food. Phase 1, if eaten as suggested, contains about 1300 to 1500 calories and 68 grams of protein. I think that's right, lol, I'm trusting my memory.

First off, great job on nursing for so long. Nursing is a job in itself, and you deserve a lot of credit for hanging in there so long!

I haven't started the diet yet, but from what I can see of it, I really don't think it would be enough protein for you. I'm speaking from a nursing mother's point of view - I nursed my last baby for a year. Like you, I was STARVING the entire time and found the only thing that really helped was making sure I got enough protein with each meal. While the beans and rice do have some, it's hard to eat enough of them to get what you need while you are nursing. I found a zone-like diet worked well - just making sure I ate lots of veggies and fruit, but added some meat and cheese in every meal, too.

Just a side note, I didn't find that I could really lose weight until I stopped nursing. I know that's not what they tell you, but that's how it was for me. I'm not sure if it's because I was so hungry all the time, or if my body was just holding onto the weight for my milk supply.

    Anyway, good luck!
