Any GERD sufferers out there?

  • After nearly two years of only mild, occasional, controlable bouts of heartburn, my reflux/hiatal hernia is back with a vengence. Can't think that it would be related to the diet, in fact, the opposite seems like it should be true. Seems like eating less fat, losing weight, drinking lots of water, etc. should only help, but I feel like something's been strangling me all week, and lots of Prilosec and Tums isn't budging it. (I'm just starting Wave 2, but haven't been drinking wine yet.) Anyone else with GERD notice a difference, good or bad, with Sonoma?
  • no actual knowledge here but maybe your body just needs to adjust. I know the addition of all the veggies has made my hubby quite "musical", lolI would expect that the same principles of gas may affect your heartburn???

Talk to your doctor and hopefully they'll say it will just be short lived.
  • Hi there mel:

I have a hiatel hernia that I've had operated on twice...What a pain in the rear!! Before the surgery I had horendous heartburn, I never left the house without checking to see that I had my anatacids with me. Since the surgery I still get it sometimes, but much less severely and it's much more rare. I find that too much coffee, carbonated drinks, red sauce and apples are my triggers. Every once inawhile I'll have an episode that I just can't explain though.....

I have determined that it's not all diet. If anything though, a healthy Sonoma diet is much better than a diet with greasy, sugary and processed foods which so often upset my tummy.......I did some research on a new discovery, a potential THIRD nervous system in the body called the "anteric nervous system" which is located in the bowel/gut area. There is some very interesting work going on in this area which shows there may be a link between stress/anxiety/mental triggers and gastro-intestinal symptoms. Do a google search and read a little on it. It made me feel a whole lot better about my health issues and made me feel like I actually had some sort of control over things so I could quit obessessing over food diaries and trigger foods. Granted, there are trigger foods, but so often my symptoms seem unexplainable....Anyway, just some 'food' for thought.

  • Twenty three years since my two open abdominal surgeries, which an after effect was an altered digestive system, I sometimes get GERD so badly it gets into my ears. Cutting out the prepackaged foods, the saturated fats and the transfats has helped immensely, but this is a new plan for you. Does take some getting use to. I still have to keep a bottle of Maalox on my desk at work, but it's not used daily anymore.

As you know, One of the triggers for a lot of people's GERD is stress so take a look at that factor as well.

If you have some concerns since you do have a medical condition, you should bring this up with your MD as well
  • Mel......I have had GERD for many many years. Afew years ago it got so bad that my esophraguswas eroded and I was put on Nexium which I have been on for years now. I have no problem with it at this time. If I over do spicy foods,sauces.popcorn,choc. even caffiene of any type I can get into trouble. I also have a hiatal hernia . I feel that my system is handling Sonama way of eating quite well. The one thing I can never eat is fresh corn, can't handle it. Once in the blue moon you'll see popcorn on my snack but not often. Sometimes otc don't take care of the problem especially when its bad. Check with your doc for advise and see what he says. He may want to do a endoscope on you. They put you to sleep for that but its better to seek his advice, I hope you are feeling better
  • I too have a hiatal hernia and just told me husband today that I have not had to take one single Zantac since starting this diet. I can agree with Batmomm about the "musical" gas. Lol, it has been a panic to get somewhere a few times this week. Hope you get better soon Mel! Vicki
