Need chip alternative...

  • I can't live without homemade salsa...i've tried. Although the salsa is 0 points, I need an alternative for the chips as they can add up quickly. Any suggestions?

ps - i dont like red peppers, so that wont work.
  • most any raw veggie goes great with it

use it as a zero point salad dressing

    bagel chips

    pita chips

make your own tortilla strips (I get Arizona brand corn tortillas that are 2 for 1 point, cut into strips 1/2"-3/4" and bake after spraying with a bit of oil and then salting after baking)

    Baked chips

Light (beware if you have Olestra problems) chips
  • Personally, I love celery with salsa.

  • Plain rice cakes would probably go well with salsa and you could put some low fat cheese and a little refried beans and bake it in the oven til the cheese melted.
  • My substitute for chips in all dips is sliced cucumber with a little bit of salt and pepper. Just slice the cucumber, add salt and pepper to taste, and dip. Its salty AND crunchy, like a chip, but super-low calorie. I buy english cucumbers so I can leave the skin on for the extra fiber and preparation ease.
  • Jicima is my favorite with salsa
  • The baked chips are relly great!
  • Tostitos offers baked tortilla chips and wholewheat ones - not sure of the points in those since I don't buy them but they must be lower than regular ones.
  • Tortilla chips are much lower in points than you might think, but I love wheat crackers too. I look at the number of items I get per serving. I'd rather eat 20 of something than 10 of something.. and just think, thats way more trips to the mouth

Just to give you an idea:
    regular potato chips - 4pts - 14 chips
    regular large tostitos - 3pts - 7 chips
    tostitos rounds - 3pts - 13 chips
    Reduced fat wheat thins - 3pts - 19 crackers
    100-cal pack wheat thin chips - 2pts - 21 "chips"
    *Baked Bite Size Tostitos" - 2pts - 20 items

Another idea - Don't just limit yourself to just salsa with chips. If its the taste of the salsa you crave and not the chips, think about using your homemade salsa with other things. I feel like I can't live without my fave salsa, so I have used the following:
    -topping for baked potato
-spoon over grilled meats and fish
-wrap up salsa with a slice of turkey, veggies in a tortilla
-use as a "dressing" for my salads.
-use with scrambled eggs, omelets, breakfast burritos

Salsa is a "pointscheap" way to get a LOT of flavor.
  • Doh!
Thanks mandalinn82 for your suggestion of cucumbers! I love salsa and chips, and due to health reasons, cannot have any kind of chip. I'd never thought of cucumber chips, even though I make a cucumber salsa.
  • multigrain corn cakes i think would work well (and have more flavor and, i think more fiber, than rice cakes)
