Losing weight too quickly

  • Should I be making sure that I lose no more than 2lbs per week? I am losing 3-4...should I be eating more or working out a little less? I never thought it was a problem until I read more about it, and now I'm a little concerned. I want to do this the healthy way, and I do NOT want to gain it back. Any help would be great!
  • It would probably help to know how much you are eating and how much exercise.

I'd say that if you are only eating, say, 1200 calls or so, then you certainly would have room to raise a bit (100 or 200 cals only) and see what happens over the next couple of weeks and re-evaluate- repeating until you get a more comfortable drop. If, on the other hand, you are eating 2000 and exercizing 3 hours every day, you could probably cut back a bit on the exercise instead.

It's just safer (IMHO) to keep everything as close to maintenance as possible and still lose weight. That way you won't be making drastic changes once you gain your goal weight and will have a better chance of continuing with the new lifestyle.

Oh, and if it's just one or two weeks at the higher rate, but in general you are losing closer to 2 lbs I wouldn't worry too much. Rates will naturally fluctuate over time. There will probably be those weeks with no loss to balance the higher ones in the long run.
  • I am eating about 1800-200 calories a day (still nursing, so that's what my doc reccomended), and I exercise twice a day, 6 days a week. My total exercise in a day is about 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours.
As far as how often I lose more than 2lbs a week...it depends on how good I've been that week. Sometimes I won't lose at all, and then sometimes I will be 4 lbs down.
    Thanks for your reply!
  • I think that's fairly normal. When I was 200+, I was losing about 8-10 pounds a month.
  • Okay, I lost 60 pounds in my first 3 months when I started (around your weight) and that was 5 pounds a week. Then it slowed to 3-4, 2-3 and now it's normal range of .5 to 2 pounds a week. It wouldn't be healthy for me to lose 5 pounds a week now, but at the morbid obesity stage, it's an acceptable rate and it's actually the rate that WLS patients experience. Especially since you are breastfeeding (which can spur weight loss), I wouldn't worry about it, and enjoy it while it lasts!!!!

And just to comment, the 5/4/3 pound weeks that I had in the beginning have all averaged out to 2.3 pounds a week. And when I reach goal, I'm sure that number will be an even 2 pound weight loss per week.
  • Nursing can contribute to faster weight loss for some people too . Sounds like you're on the right track!! I'm jealous, I want to lose that fast! LOL
  • I lost weight very quickly while nursing my babies. Enjoy it while it lasts. Good job on the weight loss.
  • Thank you everyone! I should add that I am not nursing much....my son is 16 months old, so I am not his only source of nutrition. He nurses at naps, bedtime, and whenever I am sitting down...lol. I don't know how much milk he is actually taking from me, but I think it's more comfort nursing than anything.
    Thanks again!
  • It is normal for those who are still at pretty high weights (over 220 or so for women) to often lose weight a little quicker than the recommended 1-2 pounds per week. It WILL slow down, though...as your weight goes down some. So, enjoy it while it lasts!
