Are these SBD friendly?

  • Hey all -

I found these 'energy' bars @ Trader Joe's the other day. They are yummy and only $.49! The are called ZBar (by Cliff Bar). They come in three flavors: Peanut Butter (YUM!), Chocolate Brownie (YUM YUM!), and Chocolate Chip (I haven't tried these)

They looked SBD friendly to me...but what do you think?

    ZBar - Peanut Butter:
INGREDIENTS: Organic Peanut Butter (Organic Peanuts, Salt), Organic Evaporated Cane Juice Syrup, Organic Rolled Oats, Organic Brown Rice Syrup, Organic Tapioca Syrup, Organic Fig Paste, Organic Peanuts, Organic Oat Flour, Organic Milled Flaxseed, Organic Oat Fiber, Natural Flavors, Organic Chocolate (Organic Unsweetened Chocolate, Organic Evaporated Cane Juice, Organic Cocoa Butter, Soy Lecithin), Salt, Baking Soda.

    Serving 1 bar (36 oz.)
    140 calories
    20g carbs
    3g fiber
    3g protein

And they would be considered a grain serving...right?
  • I think they may have too much sugar in the forms of cane juice etc to count... but I'm not sure.
  • Sorry. These are definitely NOT SBD bars.
  • Thanks, Ruth.

Just so I get a better understanding of SBD friendly foods, what makes them illegal?

  • The biggest problem is the syrup content. Cane syrup is liquid sugar! Just because something is organic doesn't mean it's OK for SBD.

    Here are the culprits:
Cane Juice Syrup, Brown Rice Syrup, Tapioca Syrup, Fig Paste, Evaporated Cane Juice, Cocoa Butter

    Hope this helps.
