How to get over Plateau

  • Good Morning....I have been losing quite steadily on SBD, until 2 weeks ago. I suddenly stopped losing weight period. I have not changed my diet and have not lost an ounce, nor have I gained. I know there must be something I can do to start the weight loss again. I would appreciate ANY tips, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, and don't want to get side-tracked now. Thanks
  • A plateau happens when your body takes a 'break' from the weight loss to adjust to its new level of calories and/or exercise. It's perfectly normal, so let it happen. It's only been 2 weeks, which isn't really long enough to be considered a plateau. Wait another week or two and things should start moving again. It's a normal process and a short 2-3 week 'rest period' for your body is necessary.
  • Well, 2 weeks seems like forever when stuck, but sometimes your body just needs to adjust to the weight loss. I usually figure I'm on a plateau when it lasts for 3 or more weeks. You might suddenly start losing again without changing a thing.

However, if I really think I'm on a plateau, I will sometimes try to shake things up by changing my workouts around. Try throwing in a couple more intense workouts during the week, or try adding some extra walking time in.

The other thing that I've noticed for myself is that some of my plateaus have occured when I'm working out really hard and not eating enough. My last plateau lasted for about 1 1/2 months. It was only when I added some extra calories to my diet that I started losing again. I think that when I started doing Tae Bo, I was burning more calories than I was used to but I never made up for that by eating more, thus a long plateau hit me.

Look at your diet and your exercise, see if anything is changing and make some adjustments if needed and if not, maybe your body just needs some time to adjust.

    Good luck!

That's usually how it happens. The weight will start coming back off.

Some of us have been stuck for weeks or even months. I've been the same weight since early March, but I'm also nearing my goal and my body seems to want to settle at 139.
  • I am stuck too!!! I have been at same weight now since december. I know I need to do some changing up of the things I do. But I cant seem to get motivated anymore :-( Dunno why either. I've hit plateaus before during this journey. But none have ever lasted this long before!! I am not really sure what to do. Anyhoooo, for the most part, they are all right, it will pass, and you will start losing again. Just be patient, and keep up the great work!!
  • I read this weekend that it's not considered a plateau unless it's no weight loss for a period of 3 weeks straight. Look at your exercise. Changing that up always helps me. Walking 45-60 minutes every other day, doing short walks with bursts of speed the other days, and a day of rest each week helps me jumpstart.
